Hi, I am thinking about becoming a Catholic and I was very interested in the Christmas speech given by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. He said a special prayer for all the children of the world.

My understanding is that the Pope is God's emissary here on earth, so presumably he must be able to speak directly to God. I mean, if HIS prayers aren't listened to, what hope is there for the REST of us? ....Does this mean that for the whole of next year no innocent children will be blown to pieces by bombs, starved, raped , beaten or tortured?

Or maybe God will choose to STILL work in mysterious ways and allow this to happen.- meaning that he has disregarded Benedict XVI's prayers? ..... Which I would find confusing.

I am particularly interested in this "working in mysterious ways" thing, wouldn't God get more respect if he just stopped committing the SIN OF CONCEALMENT and reveealed himself, I think we are as ready for it as we will ever be?

Maybe it means that the pope will distribute the vatican's treasures and money among the poor.....can you imagine?
but yes, good point, if the pope is the highest ordained person who has direct access to god and then god doesn't answer his prayers...what does that say about god or the pope?

if she really is unfit to be a parent then it will be much easier to give your child your last name, but it's a lengthy process and your child's birth certificate will become a two maybe even a three page document. You can not force her to give the baby your last name, she could decide it's last name is poop and you couldn't change that. But if you are going to get custody, first since she isn't letting you onto the birth certificate you will need to file a petition to establish paternity. Once your paternity has been established you can begin to go through the process of getting custody. If you end up with sole custody then you will have the power and the rights to change your child's last name. If she really is unfit to be a parent then try to get custody, however if this is just a problem between you two think about your child, if you really care this much about your child then you shouldn't rip it away from it's mom. However you can still file your petition for paternity and once it's established get a court order for what's called reasonable visitation. You would get your child every other weekend and every other holiday basically. You however would not be able to change it's name. Perhaps if you try communicating with the mother more you could try a comprimise such as hyphenating both your last names, or like I did with my son I just gave him two last names with no hyphenation so that he can choose which he wants when he's older.

The only prayers that God hears are the prayers from the people who have accepted Jesus Christ's blood sacrifice for their sins (including those praying the prayer for salvation for the first time). This is why people are hurt by religion, because religion confuses people to think that some guy with a big hat is the only person on earth that can pray to the true God and be heard - and that is a bunch of bologna. Jesus Christ died on the cross to give us a way to the Father, so that we could have access to Him. This is not what I say, this is what the Bible says.

This is one of the best questions that I've read in a while. The sarcasm is oozing...

...His prayers will fall on deaf ears, just like the rest of those who choose to pray. Once we stop praying for magic and start taking responsibility for our own actions (such as not blowing Iraqi children to bits with our bombs), we might find that progress can be made. Prayer just absconds us of responsibility for our earthly actions.

What were the last 10 special prayers about? Okay, there was that one about "where the heck are my g-d car keys?" but most big issues are just unanswered (oh, wait, technically that would be 'answered in the negative' because He answers all prayers).

I do wonder how people can keep faith in the face of the overwhelming evidence that prayer does nothing.

The church you mention have one BILLION followers.
And a fortune of OLD.
And to help Africa in this total catastrophe of HIV they tell people that CONDOMS cause HIV.
If you give them to people they might get sexual ideas.
DO OH!
These guys ARE RICH/LOADED/INFLUENTIAL!
If they took a third of what is possible to liquidate and bought some pharmaceutical company in South Africa and made the license holders on blocking medication happy with what ever string pope&co can pull the situation would improve more than advice against condoms.
I guess they DONT WANT TO!

Normally, I'd say no but since it was a SPECIAL prayer, that's different.

The Pope will also pray that we will all be granted super-powers and that the San Diego Chargers will win the Super Bowl.

If you think one old man in Rome can change the world by "wishing" for it, I'd say you're more than confused.

The Pope's prayers are a bit more effective than our prayers because more people will listen to his prayers than yours or mine. God hears everyone's prayers and he answers them. Sometimes the answer is "yes", sometimes the answer is "no". Sometimes, the answer is "later".

The Pope's prayer will be answered if someone who hears his prayer is moved by the grace of God to do something about the hunger andf pain of children.

Will you be one of those people?

I don't think that anything will eliminate the hunger and poverty in this world until the majority of people finally understand the true meaning of the words, sharing, compassion, love, unity, etc..!!!
