I seem to remember that in the past it was the job of the church to look after the poor, the widows and the orphans. Since the Catholic church is against abortion (and birth control?), shouldn't it be involved in supporting all the unwanted and starving of the world? Isn't the Vatican one of the wealthiest (and most powerful) states in the world? What percentage of their income goes to charity?

Pastor Billy says: What are you really trying to say Barb? The Catholic church is against killing babies. What is birth control but a warping of terminology and reality, how are we controlling birth when every baby dies? It is not birth control but administered death think about the reality of it instead of this false reality of "birth control".
The Church is about a culture of life not death. You need to think more about individual accountability instead of brushing this off as someone elses responsibility. BTW the Catholic Church does help out young mothers and provides more charity any all other Christian groups combine go do a search you'll discover this. The Catholic Church is also one of the largest providers of care and help to those suffering from Aids.

What makes you think that the Church isn't involved in these things?

The Roman Catholic Church is the single largest nongovernmental provider of charity and humanitarianism in the world.

That's not an opinion. It's a fact.

Yes it does, there is the St Vincent Society , The Soup Kitchens. The Shelters for homeless, and that is just the beginning. There are many more, to numerous to list here The criticism of the Vatican's wealth ,which is largely in Art and gifts from all countries, is in fact a museum. Why don't they sell it an give it to the poor? Same is often said of the Queen, Elisabeth II and her wealth. What is the motive of such criticism? Are you interested in purchasing this wealth if it were for sale? There are many more Museums in the world , perhaps they should sell everything and give it to the poor as well? Could you give this some more thought, and consider that the poor are being helped by the Church the Philanthropist, the Government and that "the poor will always be with us." Merry Christmas

Note to Catholic Church: Effective contraception prevents almost all abortions. Pope John Paul II's own commission, composed of lay persons and bishops recommended that the Church allow its followers to use the "pill," because it did not use any physical barrier like a condom or cap, and was not an abortifacient. Unfortunately, the pope instead accepted a minority report asserting that to change the Church's position would mean that all previous popes had been wrong, undermining the concept of papal infallibility. Thus were tens of thousands of unplanned babies, born to people worldwide, too poor and already starving to feed them, condemned to death.

Actually, nearly all its income goes to the poor. It was in danger of becoming insolvent until a few years ago the bishops of the largest dioceses stepped in and reorganized its finances. Since the papacy refuses to reduce its spending on the poor and inflation is increasing those costs, but its income is fixed much like a retiree, it found itself spending more than it was bringing in. The major archepiscopal sees stepped in to protect the poor and stabilize Rome's income. It wasn't that long ago that the Vatican upgraded from the 1930's typewriters that were donated to it to computers.

The Catholic Church does help the poor but lately they have had to spend a lot of money in lawsuits to the victims of pedophile priests.

The Catholic church on the whole is the richest business in the world and they didn't get that way by giving away money to the needy. They make their followers give not only to the poor but to them. The popes pad says it all.

They donate pedophile priests to molest children. And when those pedophile priests were exposed, instead of expelling them, the Catholic church transfered them so they could do it again.
