As a gift, I got a parakeet for Christmas.
I am thrilled that I finally own one. I've wanted one for as long as I can remember. However, I have stumble upon the same problem I always encounter whenever I get a new pet. I have no clue what to name it. But, that's where you come in. If you can, I would like to hear any cool and unique parakeet name off the top of your head. No research necessary. My parakeet is blue and green with a little bit of yellow on it's head.

Thank you for taking your time to read and answer my question. Please do not make a mockery out of me or my question as this is a legit question.

Also, how can I teach my bird how to talk and how can I tell whether it's a boy or a girl?

Thanks again.

Congratulations on your getting your little friend and Merry Christmas!

I almost never name my animals right away because I like to get to know their personalities before naming them. We did that when we got our Green Cheek Conure and while waiting to name him I called him "Sugar", a term of endearment used in the Southern United States. Eventually the name Sugar fit because he is such a sweet little bird so that is his name.

The gender of most birds can't be identified without a DNA test done by an avian vet but Parakeets (actually he is a Budgie) are one of the exceptions to that rule. In mature Budgies, If the cere (the area above the beak surrounding the nostrils) is blue, your buddy is a male and if it is brown it is a female.

Teaching you buddy to talk takes a lot of time and patience. Just keep repeating phrases to him that you want him to learn. In the beginning, keep the words simple. "Hello" is always a good start. When training him, move him to a quiet location. If there is too much activity he will be distracted and not focus on you and your words. Also, use expression in your voice when teaching him to talk.

Sometimes I pick a name based on the color of the bird. Like one I had was gray with black wings, so I called her Batman. Another is blue, so I called him Skyblue. If all else fails and I cannot think of a name, I ask my cockatiel. She is actually good at names. The last two I bought she named Little Bird and Whoopie. I asked her about yours and she said, Luv Luv.
To tell the sex of your bird you may have to wait a few months. The nose of the boy birds turn blue when they mature.
As for a talking parakeet, good luck with that. It is very hard to train them. At least that has been my experience. If you do want a bird that will talk, but you don't want to pay $$$, get a cockatiel. I have one who is so smart and a great companion. I even travel with her and everywhere I go people fall in love with her. They are easy to train. If you spend the time with the bird, it will practically train its self.

rainbow ??? or layla, lulu, lola, trixie ??? my parakeet is named candy. if you really like it, feel free to take it. you can tell if its a boy or girl by looking at its beak. After parakeets turn 4 weeks old there beaks turn colors. If the top of the beak is blue or purplish its a boy, brown or pink is a girl and on a girl if the beak turns dark brown and crusty its probally pregnant... my parakeet is a boy and we didn't know when we got it and i liked the name candy, so we kept it as that ... good luck

Welll to tell if its a boy or girl look above the beak at the cere. If the cere if brownish/tan then its a girl. If the cere is blue then its a boy. If the parakeet is still young it might be hard to tell.
I have a male and female parakeet. I was going to name the male OTTO but i kept calling him danny for some reason so i just names him danny otto. My girls name is CLEO.

When I was a little girl I had a parakeet That I got for Christmas. My Mother named him cricket because of the sound he made. Mom said that he sounded just like a cricket.

You have a few months of training to do, but as far as naming your pet. Wait a while watch the behavior and viola! you have a name for him. In the meantime talk to him a lot and he will let you know some things about him. I named my cockatiel after I saw what a thief he was. Such a sneaky little guy that acts like what did I do?? Merry Christmas you have a friend there for many many years.

I have 1 named Bug and 1 named Tweak. To teach talking, repeat the words or phrases you want it to learn ALL the time. I had a little girl named Harley too.

Snickers! And all you have to do to teach them to talk is keep saying the same thing over and over....they are mimicking you so the more they hear what you want them to say the quicker they will say it. Oh and my grandpa sneezed so much by his keet that the bird sneezed all the time too...terribly annoying so if you DONT want him to say something watch your Ps and Qs!
