I'd just like to know if I burn less calories if I walk rather than jog the same number of miles.

If you use proper form, both running and brisk walking will burn about the same amount. Proper walking form is: shoulders back, suck abs in and gluts squeezed tight. Don't forget to swing those arms.

Speed walking is actually a less efficient gait (energy conservation wise) than running at certain speeds. This means that your body would actually save some calories if you switched to a jog. Push your walking to the point that you feel like you should be running and you can get an even better burn than with running.

The amount of calories is almost exactly the same, you do use a few more to cover 6 kilometres running but not many.

Yes, it is the same.
You are moving the same mass the same distance, therefore the energy utilised is the same.
Running or jogging requires a faster use of the energy, which makes it seem like more, but the physics remains the same.
What people are confusing is walking for 6 minutes versus running for 6 minutes. You can see that running for 6 minutes will move the given mass (you) a greater distance and therefore requires a greater use of energy (i.e. must burn more calories)

No. You burn the same number of calories in transporting your body mass from point A to point B, but in running, your body generates more heat, and the extra heat is a result of burning more calories.

Running costed you more energy than walking. You will notice that when running, you feel hardness to breathe and will have faster heart beat, that means you consume more calorie in running.
