hi, what is a puppy mill? And is it a good good idea to buy a puppy from a breeder and do they charge more? And if you bought a dog from a breeder in miami or newyork, and the dog was healthy and was for a good price, can you give me the website and phone number and email please. Oh, and where can i find a list of breed clubs and recommended breeders?
Thanks in advance.

Puppy mills are discusting places where several different breeds are kept in filthy caged conditions and bred over and over again with little or no human contact only to be sickly puppy producers. The pups are sold to puppy brokers and usually end up in pet shops, animal auctions etc.
BAD BAD BAD! STAY AWAY FROM BYB AND PET SHOPS!
Look here for breed clubs and reputable breeders:

This is what a puppy mill does:
http://www.nopuppymillscanada.ca/what_is_a_puppy_mill.htm
It is better to purchase a puppy from a breeder than from a store. A good breeder, though. Not all breeders are created equal. Yes, the breeder will charge more because there was a lot more effort and cost put into their breeding. They select mates from across the country, sometimes across the globe, and ship their dogs or frozen semen to achieve the breeding. Big cost. They take very good care of their dogs and often do genetic testing on them to see if diseases will be passed on. Big costs again. They participate in shows and dog-related sports which requires travel, entry fees and much time. Big costs again. They don't over-breed their dogs to ensure their bodies are not overtaxed. And that's just a start. Here is a checklist of what a good breeder will do:
http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/breeding/breeders.html
Anyone else who breeds dogs without the care and responsibility of a good breeder is a "miller". Backyard breeders are included. Unless the breeding dogs are known to be free of congenital problems (by testing), terrible health conditions are passed to the pups.
This chart will break it down:
http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Fair/1901/chart.html
If you decide to purchase from a breeder and you know which breed is right for your family, search the internet for the breed's national club. For example, if you decided on a Papillon, I googled "papillon club of america" and found this site http://www.papillonclub.org/. Then read, read, read. They will have info you never thought existed and probably a few recommended breeders.
Shoes and purses are fine as impulse purchases. A living, breathing, feeling dog should never be an impulse purchase. If you cannot commit 10 - 15 years of your life to devote to this animal in health and sickness, don't do it. If you're not sure and need more info, wait and learn more. The right dog will come along at the right time. Have faith.

Whoa! That's a lot of question!. "Puppy mills" refer to places that are just interested in breeding and/or selling puppies to make a profit. They don't care about the health or condition of the puppies. Avoid them. Reputable breeders are the best place to get a pure-bred dog even though they may charge more than the puppy mills. To get a list of approved breeders, contact the American Kennel Club (do an on-line search for the AKC). They can recommend breeders in your area. You can also do a search for a particular breed. If you are not set on a puppy you might want to try some of the rescue groups for a particular breed. I have a rescued racing Greyhound and they are WONDERFUL dogs to own. Good luck

A puppy mill is a home that usually breeds as many dogs as they can as often as they can for money only.Sometimes they do charge more, thinking they have better dogs, sometimes not due to having so many.I would NOT usually buy a puppy from a "MILL" but if both parents are there snd you can see what shape they are in,then the puppies may be alright as long as they are not "in-breeded"
Check out AKC.com for a good breeder list.

puppy mills are cruel and evil, do not support them, they breed their dogs non stop and have tons of puppies in little cages, if you do get a puppy from a puppy mill, consider it a rescue! Personal breeders are good to buy from, they usually have a lot of info on the dogs breeding...but you could always get a wonderful dog at the shelter too :)

Puppy mills are what usually supply pet shops with dogs. They have a bad name because they breed puppies of the most popular breeds and some of them treat their dogs as livestock. Buying from pet shops only helps perpetuate this practice. I am sorry I don't know the answers to the rest of your questions.

you would never consider buying a puppy from a puppy mill if you saw the conditions of the dogs. trust me on this one.. buy from a reputable breeder. you'll know what you are getting by seeing the parentage of the puppy. Do lots of research on the internet for the dog that's right for you.. and especially visit the AKC website.

A puppy mill is a horrible place! I want to know how they can get shut down, one by one. I am sorry, but it is really heartbreaking to see such places. People wanting money not caring how our pets are going to be. Again I am sorry, but you started from a puppy mill to reputable breeders. Is there really someone out there that has a puppy mill yet reputable. Merry Christmas and just love your pet.

Why don't you go to the shelter and give some deserving dog a second chance at life. That dog will love you forever. We all know what happens at shelters........
