It is a service of commitment of the dead. It comes from the Latin word resquiescere, meaning to rest and the name is derived from the prayer: "resquiat in pace" ("may he/she rest in peace" which is said in the Requiem Mass.

Requiem means rest.
The Requiem Mass is one of my favorite musical forms. I have a whole collection. I like the Fauré best, but Mozart's brings tears to my eyes, because it became his own funeral mass.

Sometimes the word is preceded by 'high': High Requiem--which only indicates that portions of the service will be sung or chanted. A High Requiem Mass is a funeral service with communion and singing of parts of the service.
