There was no 'remaining dollar'.
The question is, in fact, worded incorrectly, in an attempt to trick the person being asked.
The correct accounting for the problem is:
$70.00 for the room
$ 3.00 back to the guests in change ($1.00 each)
$ 2.00 to the waiter
$75.00 total originally collected
Another way of looking at it is to say:
$23.33 per guest (3 x $23.33 = $70.00) plus
$ 2.00 to the waiter
equals $72.00, the total for the room ($70.00) and tip ($2.00)
Each guest got $1.00 back, for a total of $75.00, the amount originally spent.

They paid $75 originally, but each got back one, so the total paid was $72, plus the two in the waiter's pocket. It would be the same as if they each paid 24, and then the waiter got a $2 tip.

This so called mystery is worded incorrectly.
Total bill after discount comes to $70/3 = $23.33.
the waiter returns $1 to each one 23.33+1=24.33
and waiter kept $2 i.e 2/3=.66
24.33+.66=$25 each

This so called mystery is worded incorrectly.
When the cashier gave them $.5 discount, each of them effectively paid $.70/3 = $.2333.
The waiter returned $.1 to each of them. Which moved individual contributions to $.2433 per person. Not $24 as the puzzle says.
so its
.2433x3= .7299=.73
.73+.2=.75

THEY DIDNT PAY $72.00, THEY ONLY PAID $70 SINCE $5 WAS RETURNED TO THEM, IN WHICH EACH OF THEM ONLY PAID,$23.33X3=$70+$3(W/C EACH OF THEM GOT $1)+$2(W/C THE WAITER KEPT)=$75.00
