How sweet of you to make coffee for your parents!
Put a fresh coffee filter in the coffee maker (there's a little 'drawer' in the coffee maker for it). Scoop in the filter one heaping teaspoonful of coffee per cup that you'd like to make (1 cup of prepared coffee = 1 tsp of coffee grinds). There's a little lid usually on the top back of the coffeemaker-- open that, it should have numbered lines for how many cups of coffee you'd like to make. Pour fresh water up to the line of how many cups you'd like to make. Turn on the switch - Voila! You've made coffee! (Don't forget to get out the milk & sugar)

Depends on the coffee pot. Find the coffee and see if it has a measuring scoop in it. If not, find a 1/4 cup measure.
If it is a stand on the counter, plug in the base that goes to the wall, metal with a metal lid with a glass knob, it is a percolator (they also make these for stove top, but rare.) Take off the top by the knob, lift off the lid, look in the basket, if clean and empty, skip the next sentence. If full, lift out the insides by the tube sticking up, pour off the old liquid coffee, dump out the old coffee grounds (can be messy), rinse out the basket, and put the tube back in the basket. Look on the outside of the pot for markings for making 2 cups, 4 cups, etc. Remove the basket and tube if not out and add water to a reasonable line (the markings may show though inside) and put the basket and tube back. The basket should have markings for coffee depth, 2 cups, etc., so add coffee (percolator grind it will say on can or bag if available.) Put the basket lid on, put the pot lid on, and plug in the pot. After a few minutes you should hear boiling water type sounds and after that perking sounds - the water is being boiled at the base of the tube and forcing water up the tube, against the knob - where you can see it - where it spreads across the basket lid and drains through the coffee.
If the coffee pot is a glass container with a handle on the side, it is probably a drip coffee pot. Modern drip pots have a housing that plugs in the wall and you pour cold water in the top and it heats it and drips it. Older ones have a housing, but the water is boiled on the bottom and poured into the top to drain back into the pot which is put back in the bottom. It is critical in all drip operations to find the location of the coffee filter paper and throw out the old grounds. It may be in a swing out or pull out drawer or fitted in the top. Be sure you have a new filter before throwing out the old one. The filters should be in stack near the coffee. The coffee, if labeled, should say drip grind. Push and fold the filter to fit and add a tablespoon of coffee for each cup or 1/4 cup grounds for 4 cups. The pot should have marks for 2 cups, 4 cups, etc. If the maker heats the water, put the pot in the bottom and turn the switch from warm to high, bring the water to a boil, pour the water in the top, set the switch to warm and put the pot back on the bottom and coffee will be made when it drips back down.
There is a less common kind with two glass globes, the top one having a tube that drains into the bottom. The cold water is put in the bottom one, the coffee with filter goes in the top one and they fit firmly together. The pot is heated on the stove, the steam formed pushes the water up the tube into the upper pot, it is set off the burner, and the water drains back down through the coffee.

It really all depends on the coffee, the grind and the strength that you prefer but if you are using an average grocery store bought bag of pre-ground coffee start out with using a well rounded teaspoon per cup. For example...if you have a 10 cup coffee maker (and are filling it up)...use 10 teaspoons in the filter. You may have to adjust this with the next pot that you brew if it is too strong or too weak for your parents (they will let you know...or ask them). Everyone has different tastes. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Go to any local grocery store and choose the type of coffee beans of your choice.
Grind the beans in the nearby grinder. You can either do this at home, if you have a grinder, or at the store. Grind the beans very, very finely for the best taste.
Go home and put a coffee filter in the filter part of your coffee pot.
Measure out the coffee grounds and put them in the filter. Put in 1 Tbsp. for every 6 oz. cup of coffee.
Measure out the water. Just look at the lines on the pot for the coffee and add water according to how much coffee grounds you put in.
Pour the water into the water basin of the coffee pot.
Put the coffee pot back and wait until coffee is fully brewed.
Pour into a coffee cup and enjoy!
Tips
Make sure to close the bag of coffee grounds after you measure out your grounds because your coffee will go stale.
Use half and half if you prefer it.
When pouring water into the coffee maker, consider using filtered water. The majority of coffee is water so it will help to not take away from the taste of the actual coffee bean.
