Your doctor sounds a bit crappy to me. I'd find a new one. Ear infections can do serious damage if they're not treated properly, so I'd find someone a bit more helpful really soon.

I'm prone to ear infections myself (I have one right now!), and the way I get rid of them is quite simple.
Go to the supermarket and get yourself some hydrogen peroxide. Use an eye dropper to put some in the affected ear. If there's a skin bug there (which there probably is) the peroxide will start bubbling and fizzing quite wildly (don't worry, perfectly safe). Leave it in your ear until the bubbling slows right down or stops. Do this a couple of times a day until the infection clears, and then once a day for the next week or so, then once a week for a while after that, just to make sure it doesn't recur.
Having said this, please only do this if you're sure your ear drum isn't perforated or anything (don't know what'd happen if that was the case). My infections are all outer ear infections, for which hydrogen peroxide is perfectly safe and effective. If yours is an inner ear infection, I don't know if the peroxide is effective.
Also, your ear canal normally has a zinc coating, which repels bacteria and therefore prevents infection. You may be zinc deficient, so it wouldn't hurt to take a good zinc supplement for a couple of months, too, just to give yourself a boost.

Good luck, whatever you do :)

Ear infections can be quite worrisome, and difficult to treat. It may be necessary for you to go to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Talk to your doctor first. It can take some time to get rid of the infection, depending on how long you had it before you sought treatment. If you're concerned about hearing loss, then you should definitely see a specialist and be tested. For now, keep taking the antibiotic, and go to your doctor for the follow-up care. Merry Christmas, and best of luck!
