He is a fallen angel. That is to say that he became corrupted by knowlege and pride so he was thrown out of heaven by God. His original name is Lucifer which means like the morning star. the name satan came after he was thrown out and it means "adversary".

Thank you for your question, and I hope you will always be interested in what the Bible says—not just about the devil, but about God and His love for you.

The Bible doesn't tell us exactly what the devil looks like; the pictures you see of him (with horns and a red suit and so forth) simply come from the artist's imagination. Similar pictures have been around for hundreds of years, however, and were meant to warn people about Satan. Satan is evil, and even these pictures should warn us not to have anything to do with him.

Satan, the Bible says, is totally evil—and yet he can disguise himself so people don't even realize who he is. In fact, the Bible says that sometimes "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14, KJV). Satan's goal is always to stop God's work. He tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross for our sins, and he will try to keep you from God.

Satan is real—but don't concentrate on him. Concentrate instead on Jesus, because He is stronger than Satan, and by His death and resurrection He defeated Satan. The Bible says, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work" (1 John 3:8). Ask Jesus to come into your life today because God loves you and Jesus wants you to walk with Him every day.

The Scriptures indicate that the creature known as Satan did not always have that name. Rather, this descriptive name was given to him because of his taking a course of opposition and resistance to God. The name he had before this is not given. God is the only Creator, and ‘his activity is perfect,’ with no injustice or unrighteousness. (De 32:4) Therefore, the one becoming Satan was, when created, a perfect, righteous creature of God. He is a spirit person, for he appeared in heaven in the presence of God. (Job chaps 1, 2; Re 12:9) Jesus Christ said of him: “That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him.” (Joh 8:44; 1Jo 3:8) Jesus here shows that Satan was once in the truth, but forsook it. Beginning with his first overt act in turning Adam and Eve away from God, he was a manslayer, for he thereby brought about the death of Adam and Eve, which, in turn, brought sin and death to their offspring. (Ro 5:12) Throughout the Scriptures the qualities and actions attributed to him could be attributed only to a person, not to an abstract principle of evil. It is clear that the Jews, and Jesus and his disciples, knew that Satan existed as a spirit person.

Where is Satan? Is he in hell? No.

Revelation12:7 And war broke out in heaven: Mi′cha·el and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled 8 but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven. 9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.
12 On this account be glad, YOU heavens and YOU who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.”

---Yes he is down here misleading the earth and trying to kill all who believes in the true God.

Satan is supposedly an angle that took gods offer of free will. and for it he was cast out of heaven. he was the most beautiful angel in heaven. he is still the most beautiful. he is the great deceiver or the accuser. he is not the god of hell. just a ruler of it. abadon is still above him in hell. some say his name was Lucifer while he was still in heaven. some say he was 2nd in command to god. there are many stories that surround the devil just go look them up. if anything the bible is the book to look at because most religions do not have a devil only the christian god.

one last tidbit of info lol
the Jews have no devil in the Torah. the devil only exists in the christian religion. which is strange because Christianity stems off the Jewish religion. makes you wonder.

Satan, also known as Lucifer, was the highest and finest of the angels God made. He was called Son of the Morning, and was wiser and far above all the other angels. He was so enamored of himself that he decided he wanted to be god, that he was close enough, and he wanted to rule creation. Since he could not overthrow God in a coup with some others who admired him, he decided to overthrow creation, to spoil things for God. So God made a special place for him nd the others who followed him, a place where Satan could rule, which we call Hell. Satan loves to steal honor from God, and he does it every moment he can, starting with the serpent he controlled in Eden.

Satan is the spirit creature who is the chief adversary of God and of all who worship the true God. The name Satan was given to him because of his becoming a resister of God. Satan is also devil because of his using a serpent in Eden to deceive Eve, and for this reason " serpent "came to signify "deceiver".
