That is the oldest riddle in book!
A baby crawling in the morning, in the after the grow into a teenager walk on they two feet and at the evening the teenager aged into an senior citizen walk with a cane.
The Meaning of is that we will all age with time and we all must respect our elders.

A salamander. He wakes up with four legs. In the afternoon he has a nasty accident with a chainsaw and loses two legs. By the end of the day they have grown back. But then he has another encounter with the chainsaw, and loses one of them again.
I have spoken with Sophocles and he says that was the original answer, but when it was pointed out to him that chainsaws weren't around back then he changed it to man.
I prefer the salamander answer, at least it's funny.

I heard somthing like this a while ago and the answer to that was a man, as he crawls on all four as a baby, walks on two legs as an adult, then walks with a walking stick as an old man. Thou yours takes place over a day, so I have no idea on that one!

As babies we crawl on the floor on 4 "legs",
grown up we walk on two legs,
and when we are old we need a walking aid.
So we walk --- at the end of life --- on three "legs".
