Rockhampton is a bit of a hick town. Cheap to live, but not cosmopolitan. CQU does not have a high reputation; this does not mean it is not good (and university standards are monitored by the government), but you can get better education elsewhere).

Avoid any university that calls a library an "independent learning centre"

Rockhampton is a country town - hot as hades too! make sure that you find a place with air conditioning. I went to CQU for my bachelor of education and had no problems with them - as for their reputation... I was very happy with the services provided. Accomodation can be hard to come by - start looking via the internet. My son moved to Rocky and is renting a room in a house for $140 a week. The house is fully furnished. He's happy with that as it is in the centre of town and he doesn't have a car. My niece lives there and is renting a house for $260 a week. If you are willing to work, you'll get a job. With the mines locally, most people are opting to go out there and leavng lots of positions open. Don't just go to the shopping centres, have your CV ready and drop them off to as many places as you can.
Although a hot town, I've always enjoyed my time there. Hint - don't go down Bolsover or East Streets after 8pm at night!
