You can control borders with Police or Customs. I am refefing to military MIGHT as in nuclear etc.

I am not denying the legitimate need or use of an army .

How do you think the borders stay safe? There aren't little safety elves watching over the borders. The coast guard protects our borders from drug smugglers everyday. Doesn't that make you feel at least a little more safe? Can you imagine if we didn't have a strong military? Just think about it. I wouldn't want to live in a place like that.

Ah, youth!
Until WW II the US had a traditional distrust of standing armies we inherited from Britain, and we always kept the army small, calling up militia in times of crisis. We kept getting men killed doing it that way. And now you can't just call for volunteers and have them strap on a B2 bomber with a few weeks' training. Modern war requires a fairly large professional force.

If you refer to "peace through superior firepower" then the meaning is easy. If you are the biggest and baddest on the block, no one will want to mess with you. That gives you security/safety. Of course no government is safe without consent of the people. If the people are not happy with the government, it doesn't matter how strong your military is, it will fail. Freedom is in the heart of all people. There is no military that can give you that. The military can defend it, however.
