Quicksand is a harmless-looking stretch of mud. You think you can cross it easily, but once you sink in, it sucks you down and when you try to pull up one leg, the other sinks in all the more. Without outside help, help from firm ground, therre is a high risk of death.
Today it is simply a common figure of speech, a flowery description of being caught in something that you cannot really fight against, that draws you down more and more.
You are welcome!
