I use a free modeler called wings 3d. I Love it. It's like clay modeling. You take a shape, and move vertexes around, and apply changes to it until you're happy. The UV Editor is good too, just takes some time to get to know how to use. The only downside to this is you can't animate, and the included renderer isn't the greatest.

Everyone says you must have talent to model in 3d, I say that's only half of it. You need to know the program itself more than the talent. :)

If you are new at modeling I recommend finding a software that is geared for the type of output you are after.
The basics of modeling is data. Today there are many applications that will keep you up at a higher level from having to construct the underlying data that the cover of the model resides and is represented by.
An example is a person. to simulate a lot of the computer imagery in film today they attached sensors to real people and have them act out the movements. The computer records this data and applies the movement to the actual model data in the design.
Under the surface of the person represented by the computer model is normally what is referred to as a wire frame. the wire frame is a set of data (math) (normally vectors) which give the place to apply the surface.
If you are interested in the process in depth just use your favorite search engine for keywords, such as wire frame, 3D modeling, etc..
