The full effect of maternal use of Methamphetamine on the newborn infant is not completely known and there is currently a multi-center study underway to better describe this issue. It is, however, known that the infant may suffer intrauterine growth delay and may be smaller than the norm at birth. Some of these infants have withdrawal symptoms and a recent study showed that about 4% of that study of Methamphetamine exposed infants needed treatment for withdrawal. Newborns that were exposed to Methamphetamine in utero are frequently very sleepy for the first few weeks after birth, often to the point on not waking to feed.

The use of speed can cause the baby to get less oxygen, which can lead to a small baby at birth. Methamphetamine can also increase the likelihood of premature labor, miscarriage, and placental abruption. Babies can be born addicted to methamphetamine and suffer withdrawal symptoms that include tremors, sleeplessness, muscle spasms, and difficulties feeding. Some experts believe that learning difficulties may result as the child gets older.

A study in the U.S. is revealing that the use of methamphetamines during pregnancy doesn’t have the negative consequences that front line medical workers assume.


“You don’t find still births and abortions, or premature ruptures in the membranes-all of the junk you hear out there,” said Barry Lester, head of Infant Development Center at Brown University Medical School in Providence, R.I.


Lester is three years into the Infant Development Environment and Lifestyle (IDEAL) study on methamphetamine use and pregnancy that is taking place in Iowa, Oklahoma, California, Hawaii and New Zealand.



“The data we have analyzed so far is the data on the newborn period. We've found there is no effects on birth weight, no effects on birth length,” said Lester.



“The effects of alcohol and the effects of cigarette smoking are not different than the effects of cocaine or methamphetamines. But those are legal drugs so we don’t worry about them. But they do the same damage to kids,” he said.



“What happens is you have people that work in hospitals that see a meth exposed baby, and the baby is premature. They assume that because there is meth involved it caused the premature birth.”

Please get some help with your meth addiction. It's a hard one to quit, but if you really want to you can do. I hope your child is healthy and you learn from this. Don't get pregnant again while you are using.


To the other people who curse you and tell you to get sterilized etc, they are just standing on their soap box and spewing out nonsense because they don't understand. Don't pay attention to them Just talk to your doctor and no more meth for you

So I guess you've been tweaking for a number of days(and nights).Have you reached the bottom of the barrel yet or do you still need to lower yourself to giving blow jobs for a line? Are you taking your meds? Did you talk to the DR to see if you 5150 meds would effect the baby? Have you looked into adoption?

You will be lucky if your baby is healthy. Not all problems show up at birth. Some don't show up for decades! I hope you stress over this for the rest of your life!!!
