It has always been one country, but the fight seems to be over who was there first. Thousands of years ago.
Anyway, God bless Palestine and Israel and bring peace to all those people.

Palestine is not a country anymore, rather the Israelis occupy their land because of the UN, after WWII there was a movement for Jews to have a homeland, some people wanted to establish it in Africa, the others Zionists where Palestine was.

The Arabs have always wanted thee Jews off of Muslim land. Jewish presence never ceased in Israel, even after the expulsion by the Romans, but Jewish immigration to Israel began in the 19th century as Anti-Semitic acts in Europe began to increase. The Arabs proceeded to attack and murder the Jewish immigrants. After WWII the land went from being under Ottoman rule to being under British rule. The Peel Commission (named after Lord Peel) offered the Arabs their own state, and offered the Jews a mere sliver of the land. The Jewish population accepted the proposition, but the Arabs rejected it, saying they want the Jews off the land and in the sea, literally!
They still make this claim! In fact, when Israel agreed to 95% of Arafat's requests back in 1995, Arafat rejected the deal. Saudi Arabia told Arafat his was a "criminal act."
Israel has tried repeatedly to give up its land for peace, but all failed, since the Arab Muslims want the Israeli Jews dead and gone and off the map completely.
As the saying goes: If the Palestinians put down their weapons, there will be peace. If Israel puts down its weapons, there will be no Israel.
You ask why there are two countries? Simply because Muslims only accept Jews in their countries as second class citizens at best.
Israel, a country smaller than New Jersey, with only six million inhabitants, is surrounded by 22 Arab countries with 200 million inhabitants. They have 22 Arab countries; why should they even want the only land G-d promised the Jewish nation, as it says in the Bible??
