My incar dvd player will only show a picture when it detects the brakes are at ground, ie when i'm stopped. This kind of defeats the purpose of my daughter being able to watch movies whilst i travel, we don't exactly sit around in the car watching movies, the sofa is much more comfortable.

Now, as it requires a signal to say the brakes are at ground, if i was to simply connect this wire to the car chassis to ground it would this work? Or will it be picking up an electronic signal?

I'm not much of an electrical wizz, but can find my way around it with guidance. Thanks in advance.

The short answer is yes! you can just wire it into the ground to make the system "believe" its wired to the hand brake switch. But like most other answers before. Most standalone systems do not require a hand brake cable so I take it your screen is dash mounted. As a general rule If you can see the screen from the front and your caught by police with the DVD working while your driving you will be in serious trouble!

A friend of mine was caught in the similar situation in an MPV with his kids in the back watching a DVD. He also wanted to wire the screens so they worked for the back while he was driving but he was caught on the motorway by highway police doing routine checks on people with such screens he was fined £1,500 and three points for dangerous driving. Not fair, I know but the law is the law so be warned!!!

Just to make a suggestion, buy a standalone pair of screens for the back they are relatively inexpensive now, will work independently and will not require handbrake switches or the lose of your licence!

Hope that helped

Is the screen visible from the front seat? If so watching while driving or being distracted would be really bad and illegal. Generally the parking brakes grounds the wire so just disconnect the parking brake wire and see if the ABS light and VDC light And Slip light stay off while driving. Manufactures throw the other systems in just to keep you from removing the parking brake wire. I have One customer who wanted to watch DVD's on his navigation screen it workes while the brake is clicked up two clicks parking brakes drag. AS always Year make model would be helpfull

Hi there and Merry Christmas, If you remove centre console(plastics around parking brake lever) You will find a small switch with a wire attached fixed to the lever base, this detects handbrake lever movement. Remove wire from switch and connect the wire straight to earth/chassis, this will make the system put out the warning lamp and allow the DVD to work/display.
If the wire cannot be disconnected then use a small cable tie secured tightly around switch which will illuminate warning lamp.
However, this is NOT recommended! :~).
Cheers

The parking brake must be set to watch a dvd right? ok, u have to pull the stereo out and look for the wire connected to your parking brake ( On mine it was Pink) when you find that wire, Ground it out on something metal, something connected to the frame/ body of the car. Your dvd player should work w/o the brake on... Good luck hope this helps.

look in the wiring diagram and find the brake wire. you need to re-route and ground this wire to rick the player into thinking that the ebrake is on all of the time.
