I don't care about playing games so X10 isn't needed. I have XP Pro XP Home and Win2kPro and they all work just fine. no problems!! To assemble the same system of my home net i would have to lay out some serious cash, i just can't seem to justify it, for me, nor my customers. I remember the hoopla around XP when it came out and how bad the prior products of Microsoft were, and that XP was the fix all and end all. And that the 'controlled' license was to lower the cost, well it didn't and now the prices of Vista are outrageously silly. So why should i bother?

i started in computers with MS DOS 2.1 on an old 8088 XT machine. I have like most the improvements so far. I wanted to try MS Bob, all though i didn't get a chance, I still have a solid valid copy of PowerMenu (DOS Shell) and a Machine with a running MS Win 3.11 with Win95 there were valid and visable improvements, but with WIN98 it was a waiting game until WIN98SE, this was a good thing, however we won't even discuss WinME. I have many years of experience with Windows, and my customers like it but they don't like the new versions forcing more money from them. Switching them to Linux would be nice, but the learning curve?

No need to jump at vista for the present. Win2k and xp will still be sold for 24 months to the public after vista's general release. 12 months for oems. After which time it will enter an extended support time period. This time period could be quite long. Win 98se just ended about 5 months ago, it had quite a run.
So, by the time xp becomes unsupported(not unusable), the many bugs, holes,etc in vista should be closed and you will have a better os than if you got it now.
From my own experience, I used an xp machine for a while, when my 98 machine wasn't availible. XP was new at the time, with a lot of problems. I was glad to get my machine back. Today however, I like xp.

Well I was quite resistant to XP when it first came out. I loved Windows 2000 Pro. I started using it awhile after it came out and absolutely fell in love with it. XP is now a very stable and very useful OS. I have made the decision that Microsoft is not that bad I went out and got a Zune I am hoping they make it a very functional MP3 player. Microsoft needs time to get the feel of what the customers want and what they(MS) are willing to put up with. I am going to purchase Vista when it is released yes it will have bugs, problems, and issues seriously what OS nay software in general doesn't upon release? Vista will grow and become more stable and much better than XP.

You should not bother with Windows Vista. It has many flaws. It is a memory hog and it runs very slow on my 3.2GHz machine with 3 GB RAM.
Microsoft will continue to support your Windows 2000 Professional and XP products for a while. I would hold off as you really do not need it.

Don't bother until all the software you depend on requires Vista. I highly suggest that you switch to Linux as more and more software vendors are beginning to release Linux versions of their software.
If it's the learning curve that's preventing you, there are many forums online that will help you figure out where to start.
You should also keep in mind the fact that Linux is free and you'll have to pay for Vista. (If you get a less-than-legit version of Vista... good for you. Too bad it will lock you out of your computer as soon as it's connected to the internet until you pay a much higher fee to get a legit license. Oh well.)

you shouldn't jump on it. it has a few nice extra features, but i'll be waiting until at least SP1 comes out. besides, XP Pro works great.
you mentioned customers though. if you're building computers for other people, you should buy the new copies of Windows MCE 2005 for them. you get a coupon for a free upgrade to Vista when you buy Media Center Edition now. that gives you the best of both worlds: XP for proven reliability, and free Vista if/when the customers want to upgrade.

I won't be considering Vista yet, either. Still too buggy and a resource hog. Not worth it for a few bells & whistles. XP does the job fine and is going to be supported for some time yet.

if everything its fine and working the way is supposed to be,
well don't invest for the moment,plus you had mention a valid point,why bother?and the experience with previous products with the company you had mention ,i does not motivate you at all,
to take that step,wait some reasonable time,and watch how is the feedback about the product.probably too much expectation
have been created about it,and then ,not a 5star product as perceived

Don't bother with Vista until it's released to the public next month. Vista still has flaws, and is very unstable.
