You cannot use your friends copy of Windows XP. Your friend must have already validated her copy and serial number over net / phone, and you cannot use it, atleast as a original version. Only option you got is to continue use it as a not-genuine copy or buy a new XP CD and use that serial no and get validated. You may need not re-install the new copy, only the serial number would do. I guess you will not be able to complete the installation and login. You will get an option at logging in to change the serial number, and then you can proceed into validating your new copy.

You can continue to use it but won't get any updates from MS. But if you follow the instructions from the 'gray-colored' star type icon in the system tray, you can buy a lisense for your counterfeit copy of XP from Microsoft. Cost varies...maybe 80GBP ($170USD)

You can do it illegally (piracy) . i have a registry key editor(its a small file less than 10kb in size)which will make your xp geniuine and thus all programs requiring geniunity will work.My email address is anujagraj@yahoo.com.
There is no other method other than this where u dont lose ur data.
