Naturally I have blonde hair. I have been dying it with semi-permanent dyes such as Manic Panic and another brand I can't remember. The last 3 times I dyed it, no colour has stayed on my roots. The first time I used a blue which used to do the trick and the next two times green. Everytime, the previously dyed area absorbs colour, but the roots don't seem to at all. I've tried washing my hair with shampoo before and I've tried without this step. I've tried using vinegar, which also didn't help. I leave it in for more than the stated amount of time (about 1 hour). Any suggestions???

I'd guess your hair is quite porous apart from the roots so the porous part is taking the dye well. On the positive side it means your roots are in good condition. The only thing i can think of is to try a permanent dye.
It could just be your hair is growing more quickly just now so your roots are showing more.

Well, what I've actually found is that the best semi permanents cost about $3.99!!! When all else fails, React (my favorite brand) does the trick in about half an hour. It's a better dye because it's an ink cream. Not a fudge which has some oils which actually make virgin hair resist taking the color. (Manic Panic has a mistletoe extract that does this, but hair that is already processed is porous so it soaks up EVERYTHING). And it comes in great shades of blue purple red orange and yellow. Since it is a true pigment though, I reccomend using glove and taking out all hair jewelery, and putting vasoline on ANYTHING you DON'T want to take the color. Once my gloves snagged on a dred cuff while I was using React's Plum and my hand stayed purple for like a week.

try applying the colour to the roots first as if you are just having the roots dyed and leave it for about 15 - 20 Min's, then add it to the ends and leave for another 15 - Min's, the roots are what they call virgin hair (new hair) and dye always takes longer to take on that hair. all the best for 2007 and good luck!!!

STRIP YOUR HAIR. WASH IT WITH A SHAMPOO CALLED CLARIFYING IF THAT DOESN'T WORK TRY NEUTRALIZING SHAMPOO.IT IS FOR RELAXED HAIR AND IT SAYS NOT TO USE UNLESS YOU ARE RELAXING THE HAIR . IT SAYS NOT TO USE IT BECAUSE IT WILL DRY OUR HAIR OUT. BUT IN YOUR CASE IT COULD BE A GOOD THING.

WASH IT WITH THE NEUTRALIZING SHAMPOO AND THEN WITH A REGULAR SHAMPOO TO PUT YOUR NATURAL OIL BACK AT HE ROOTS AND THEN DIE IT DON'T USE PERMANENT. IF IT DON'T WORK CUT YOUR ENDS.

PS. DON'T USE IT ALL THE TIME
