The mind likes to think. If we direct our minds to think about something specific, it will do that but at times our mind will wander and think about whatever.

If we do not direct our mind to think about something specific, it will wander all over the place but it will gravitate to worries and things we are anxious about.

If you really don't have any control over what your mind thinks then I encourage you to to see a psychiatrist or psychologist.

If the above is not the case, I would encourage you to start doing some mental exercises. A beginning one is to sit in a comfortable chair, relax, and then to place your attention on a word or short phrase. You need to choose this word before you start this exercise and then stick with it.

Gently repeat that word or phrase over and over for 20 minutes. In the beginning, it will be difficult to keep you attention on the word for 5 minutes but persevere and ignore the other thoughts that come into your mind.

When your mind wanders so far that you forget that you are even doing the exercise (and it will) gently bring your mind back to mentally repeating the word that you have chosen.

Over time you will train your mind to stay on the word or phrase that you have chosen. Remember that during the time of the exercise your only intention is to mentally repeat your chosen word, without distractions for the 20 minutes.

In the beginning this will seem to be impossible but I assure you that it is possible. I would not talk about doing this exercise to anyone that you are not absolutely sure will be 100% supportive and encouraging about this.

The reason for that is that one of the difficulties in doing this is that before you come to the realization that you are the director of your mind and not the mind itself, your mind will come up with thoughts lke these: "This is stupid", "This a waste of time", "I'll never be able to do this", etc..

Before you realise that you are not your mind, you will believe that YOU are thinking these thoughts and that they are valid. If you tell a lot of people that you are doing this, some will tell you these same things and the tendency then is to stop doing the exercise.

A lot of people call this kind of exercise, "meditation" but it's really a concentration exercise. If you do this exercise 20 min. twice a day you will find that your ability to concentrate on everything will gradually increase.

Since you are aware that God is real I will add that you can make this into a meditation or prayer by choosing a word like "Jesus", Holy Spirit", or a phrase like "God is love", or something from the scriptures that is meaningful to you.

Doing this is not a "vain repetition" but a way to keep our mind on God. Isaiah 26:3 says: "He will be kept in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusts in Thee.".

Yes, we are supposed to control our thoughts but our mind is like a horse that has not been tamed and this is a way to start the taming process. God bless you.

Obviously your brain is causing you to think. The brain has several different lobes that all do important things. One of those lobes is the frontal lobe which is responsible for cognition and memory and is also responsible for personality and traits. There are also different areas around the brain that store specific memories for stuff like things you've heard, touched, or have seen. There are also other areas in the brain that signal you're body that you need to eat so you start THINKING you're hungry or thirsty. Or there's parts of your brain that starts signaling sleepiness so you start thinking "Man, I need to go to bed."

So basically your environment plays a huge role in the way that you think. The stuff that you've learned through experience and/or observation since you were an infant plays a vital role. So you may be thinking about how to fix a relationship with someone BECAUSE it isn't going so well. Or we might be thinking about trying to figure out a way to pay the bills BECAUSE you don't make enough money. We're constantly thinking about things BECAUSE something else that has triggered us to do so.

So I guess my question to you is if we are constantly thinking about things BECAUSE of something that has happened or has yet to happen do we really have control over what we think... or is it really our thoughts which have control over us?

Well I think we all wonder about why we think the way we do. But if you are obbsessing over it day by day, then you should go to a professional and seek help ,right now... call up the crisis line, and see about getting someone to talk to you about this. See if you can get an appointment after the hoildays. Cause that is a form of OCD. Now i can not say you have OCD, I can say i do. I think you should go in and see an professional about this.... or it will just keep driving you batty day after day, thinking and wondering the same thing over and over every day of your life. You want to get on with your life , then go seek professional help.

Merry Christmas

Thinking about thinking is called "metacognition". In a way, it gives us a chance to reflect why we are thinking in a certain way and so on. It seems like you're not comfortable doing this that you are preoccupied with it. I sometimes get overwhelmed with thoughts and I have to do some relaxation exercises or meditate. Clear the mind.

I don't ponder over why I am thinking. Instead, I try to get in other people's heads to figure out what they are thinking and why they think the way they do. I point my high powered perception at them, as to decipher their thoughts, and look into their past without them saying anything other than idle smalltalk. I analyze everything, which is annoying to some, but a skill none the less.

Our human capabilities to come up with thoughts and think is a gift from God--that would help us in life. We think because we were made to do so, because we have to live this life well.

If you were to stop thinking for 5 seconds... 1... 2... 3... 4... 5...

in that time... what you lost, is what isn't real.
