The best thing you can do for him is get him used to being combed and brushed. Since he is so young comb him every day so he learns its apart of his life and he will accept it. You will eventually get him to lay down for grooming and that will make it 100% easier on you and on him as he grows older and goes though his coat change. Comb his hair in sections down to the skin.
Whenever you bathe him it is extremely important to give a complete combing and brushing, because if you bath without combing first and there is mats the mats will get super tight down to the skin and that can be quite painful

Giving your little one a haircut is fine, Is he matted? Or does it look like he just has too much hair? 90 percent of the maltese that come into our shop get a haircut. People just dont realize how much work is involved to keep their hair long and dont want to bother with it. So when you do have him groomed ask for a puppy cut (if possible). As long as hes not to matted because brushing out mats on a puppy would be awful or any dog for that matter.

Awww! I'm so sorry to hear you're having a hard time. I know how you feel as my baby was colicky and cried for 2 months up to 6hours in a row. Does he have winds or draw his legs up to his tummy? If so, it might be colics in which case, ask your GP to prescribe Colief. He might also be teething which might be upsetting as he's a bit young to be able to chew and put stuff to his mouth. If it's any consolation, my 5 month old just did that for a week and he's back to being ok. I think his gums are just wokring hard.Good luck, email me if you want to moan/have a rant, etc Also, do you have a friend, relative or neighbour who could look after your baby for a couple of hours so that you get some rest? Baby can pick up on mum being upset and tired and cry even more. My baby used to stop crying as soon as his dad or somebody calm was picking him up...GRRRR, It used to drive me mad! xx

have you tried brushing him? contact a groomer or vet and see what comb would work best for your pup, it's best if he's accustomed to the comb and being handeled for grooming long before he visits a groomer. with the mobile grooming unless they are coming into your home directly you're still going to run into the risk of him being someplace another dog has been. make sure as part of his vaccines your vet knows you want him to have a bordetella vaccine series, you probably need to ask for this specifically.
debra-you work in a vet clinic? a 3 month old dog is not old enough to have received all vaccines yet. she says she's had him vaccinated, but he hasn't finished the series...gosh don't yell at people that are actually trying to take care of their dogs.

They are supposed to have long hair.. Your pup, by 3 months should have at least 2 vaccinations already given. It is safe to take them to the groomers. It is no worse than going to the vet where they CAN and DO pick stuff up.

i live in brooklyn heights NY and we have a great groomer in the neighborhood called perfect paws. 718 852 6200. maybe consult them. but remember, maltese have HAIR and not FUR, so you'll want to keep their hair longer for the winter months. a small breed like this gets cold!

If your dog is not totally vaccinated, you should not have your dog
groomed anywhere. yor dog still could come in contact with another dog and get sick. Kennel cough could be one thing that could cause many problems. Wait untill all shots are done. This way your dog is fully protected.
