It's nice to know how many people can cut and paste answers. Ambiguous means it has two possible meanings. In language here is an ambiguous sentence:
I like flying airplanes
I can mean either 1) I like to fly airplanes, or 2) I like airplanes that fly.
"Ambiguous" does NOT mean "unclear"--it means "having two meanings"

Ambiguous means what you hear or see can have two or more conflicting meanings or interpretations.
Example: when a grown-up male displays obvious and exaggerate signs of affection for children he's not acquainted with in absence of their parents, it could be that,
1. he's genuinely affectionate,
2. he's driven by less-than-good motives, like pedophilia, or even worse,
Therefore, this is considered an ambiguous attitude.
Hope that helps. Merry Xmas

The prefix ambi- means both, like in ambidextrous which means that you are able to use your left and right hand with near equal ability. Similarly, when something is ambiguous, it can be interpreted in more than one way and is not specific in meaning.

It's mainly a type of music, for example My Chemical Romance is an emo band. It's kind of like "preppy" or "goth", just another label.

1528, from L. ambiguus "having double meaning, shifting, changeable, doubtful," adj. derived from ambigere "to dispute about," lit. "to wander," from ambi- "about" + agere "drive, lead, act" (see act). Sir Thomas More (1528) seems to have first used it in Eng., but ambiguity (from L. ambiguitatem) is first recorded c.1400.
