Lithium is a salt. Needed by our brains to help neuro-transmitters in the electrical part function correctly, for example, fire electricity at the right time, for us to function correctly. Manic-depression without treatment, has obvious traits, bouts of manic actions such as cleaning obsessively, speaking really rapidly, delusions of grandeur, ie. "I am unstoppable, and smarter than any human alive". Taking Lithium Carbonate is LEVELING those actions out, calming you down, so you can function like a human. The flip side is " I will never be a good person, so I am going to stay in bed all year". Horrid deep depression, of which you think there is no end. Lithium also levels that out. I was on it for 7 years, 900 mg, day 300 3x day. I had my blood drawn 1x month for Lithium levels, as if it becomes toxic, they can catch it soon. Unfortunately, I did turn toxic, and had to change, but it is a long standing, well used and effective drug for bi-polar patients. Do not use alcohol with this drug.

People crack me up that answer questions like this and they have never taken it..

I take it and have for about 12 years. Are you getting blood tests regularly because that sounds like a lot to me.. How much total mg do you take in a day?

I take 900mg a day, 2 in the am and 1 in the evening. This puts my lithium level at about .7 Do you know what your last blood lithium level was?

Anyhow, it has been a good med for me, I have tried others but I no longer feel the need to change when something is working so I stay with it. I also take an anti-depressant, and klonopin for acute anxiety.

I have been pretty stable on this combination for several years now. I have regular blood testing done about every 6 months now as well.. It the beginning it was every few weeks, then every 3 months.. It really is one of the safest drugs on the market, and it is natural;-)

Hi there I am currently taking lithium, also known as lithobid.

I take 300mg, 2 in the morning and 3 at night. I have been taking this for over 2 years but in the beginning they started me with a lower dosage.

It is supposed to stop suicidal thoughts, and also from having mood swings not limited to but including: anger, irritability, homicidal thoughts, suicidal thoughts, spending spree, aggressive toward others, hostile behaviors, etc

Lithium is usually combined with other antipsychotics such as risperdal, seroquel, zyprexa, abilify etc.

Lithium or lithobid is usually for people with Bipolar disorder also known as manic-depressive illness.

I have not taken it. Someone very close to me went to a therapist for about two years and didn't improve. She then went to a psychiatrist. He spoke with her for ten minutes, checked her kidney function, and put her on lithium.

Within that ten minutes we got a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, and within two weeks she was operating normally and doing extremely well.

Lithium moderates communication between neurons and other nerve cells. It's a simple metal, but it has many other medical uses, so, in your case, you should discuss this with your doctor if you want to know how it works and how it improves your particular situation.

Best wishes to you for a happy and productive new year!

No i have not taken it, and it is not for all disorders. I have seen some people do better without it, but then when they went to their normal doctor back home, he would just put them back on it. It can be used for different disorders, like bi-poloar. It is to stablelize you so you don't get thoses really low lows, and so you don't get those really too highs, that you think you can flight. So ask your doctor what he is giving it to you for, and you can look it up in a pdr. Get a second opionion.

Merry
Christmas

I am bipolar and i have taken it for years to help treat it. It works better than all the other drugs so far they have tried me on. Helps me to maintain and keep my bipolar in check.
