The three most common are
gif (graphics interchange format)--small in size and Very portable in internet workings--somewhat lacking in detail and in color clarity and punch !! Yet-- extremely portable for any application !!

bitmap (a Windows based graphics file) very large and cumbersome But very detailed in its color rendition and clarity--extremely tough to work with in that it is NOT all that portable and is very difficult to transfer and download (due to their extremely large kb ratings)

and the ever popular (by far) Jpeg (Joint Photographic Expert Group) which is the best of both worlds----small enough in file sizes to be portable but yet very detailed in color and clarity for the detail needed in good photographic display !!

there are others --but they are as of yet still fringe area file types and have specific uses and are not actually all that popular for general use (tif ---rar---ect)

Before I get out of here--- I should at least mention PNG (portable network graphics) -- they are a format by which a lot of people see a strong center ground between the JPEG and the GIF--- they have a lot of portability and ease of transfer and the like but still maintain a lot of the detail that people like to see in their photos and graphics !!!
