every person would have their own reasons from "we don't" to "becasue we're filled with sin and he can save us".

For me personally I need god for the following reasons-

1. The human spirit is greater than science can explain- many times a body is so battered and broken, the doctors cant understand how it is still alive and other times, they can find nothing wrong and yet the person dies. This, to me is evidence of a higher power and creator.

2. There are other natural phenomenon that cannot be explained by science. For example, materials expand when heated and contract when cooled. This is not true for water cooling from about 35 degrees to 32 degrees. It actual expands, becomes less dense as the same mass takes up more volume. This is necessary so ponds, lakes, swamps, etc, freeze on the surface only and not from the bottom up. Becasue of this, life goes on. For me personally, it is not logical to deny a higher power. I feel a thanks for God everytime I get to spend time with extraordinary humans or spend time in the wilderness.

3. Sometimes people live or die based on our actions or inactions. No matter how hard we try to do the right thing, we cannot always be 100% succesful. I need to God to forgive me for all my mistakes and shortcomings. Otherwise, without God's foregiveness, I would just curl up in a ball and hide in a cave.

4. People need to know right from wrong- God provides this for many. Others may get it from other sources but I dont know what that would be- its certainly not the leaders of our society as corruption is rampant. Can you say Enron? Watergate? Kent State, Monica Lewinsky, The Keating 5, They had WMD? Steroids, etc. etc. etc.

For me, those are the main reasons that come to my head for needing God.

The first "god" was invented because early man didn't understand natural phenomena, so an answer was made up to avoid admitting ignorance and as a security blanket against fear.

Now that we have the ability to learn and think, we don't need such made-up answers; unfortunately, the ignorant have assumed that the false answers are real and hide under the security blanket instead of facing reality. Worse still, the religious seek to scare others into hiding under the blanket and smother them with it.

We need to feel that the universe is human. Never mind that humans occupy a tiny speck of the universe in time and distance, we still wish the universe to be human.
Pigs want the universe to be pig-like, we want it to be human.

Yet somehow can't we separate wishful thinking from responsible thinking?

We don't. We would be better off without a "God".

we need God to remind us of our humble beginnings, and to constantly thank him for forgiving us of all the sinful things we constantly do knowingly and unknowingly, but maybe you would like to look at it this way,why do you need life insurance,to pay off you debt.
