before he went up against Goliath in battle? he only needed one stone to finish of Goliath so what were the other 4 stones for?

David choose 5 smooth stones because Goliath had 4 brothers that David defeated later on.

For the same reason my .45 has a seven round magazine. There is the possibility you will miss the first shot, and maybe the second.

I'm not sure he selected five but if you say he did why don't you tell me. Maybe he thought he might miss with the first four and the fifth one was to kill himself with?
