I don't know if your stressed, but a lot of times I don't sleep well because I am thinking about schoolwork or something, and even if it's late I try to make sure I have ten minutes to read a book or watch a little television just to get my mind off of things. Also, it helped me to move my clock to where I can't see it (go figure) because I kept waking up and checking the time, and then I'd stare at it and be like "If I can fall asleep within the next thirty minutes I'll still get 5 hours of sleep" etc, and that would stress me out more and I couldn't fall back asleep.
Also, exercising makes your sleeping patterns more regular. Try to avoid caffeine, even during the day, and make sure not to have a lot of carbs at or around dinner (sometimes people can get energy rushes from carbs). Are you tired throughout the day? My mother and I both sleep about 5 hours a night but we are fine...it seems to be all we need.

Do you take naps during the day? If so, you need to stop.
That will cause your body to think it's had enough sleep and wake up.
If you don't, then try to do something to relax about an hour before you go to sleep. Lay in bed and read or listen to soft, soothing music at a lower level, take a nice bubble bath and relax in it, drink some Chamomile hot tea. Also, go to bed the same time every night. Get your body clock back on track.
There are many things you can try before going to a doctor for medication.
It may take several nights of doing the same thing before you start sleeping well.
Good luck. I'm also a person that has a hard time sleeping.

There are several options, but there are more questions too--why are you waking up after 5 hours? If you do not have a small child, try ear-plugs (I am a day sleeper and they are one of the tools I use to get good sleep in--I've provided a link to the brand I like the most).
If you find that you are tense, you may even try the yoga video I've included a link to. The exercises are gentle and very relaxing. You might try them before bed and see if you are relaxed enough to sleep longer.
Another idea would be to spray your pillow with a lavender pillow mist like they sell at Bath and Body Works--essential oil of lavender is very relaxing.
Melatonin is something you could try from your health food store. Use only in small amounts.
There are herbal products, and/or homeopathic products that may work. Hylands sells a product called "Calms Forte" that is a great product for people who have a hard time unwinding mentally--(I've included a link for it as well)
If all else fails, see your family doctor. Sometimes trying a prescription sleep aid for even a short period of time can help resolve your sleep issues for good! The OTC medicines for sleep are not very good for you and should be used only sparingly.
Good luck to you!!

Don't take any burden of your work all the day. Before going to bed, hear to soft music or read a good novel. Have a hot water bath before sleeping. Avoid sleep during daytime. Exercise a little. Swimming for one hour in a day is good. you can even do meditation for 15 to 20 minutes a day. Eat food rich in carbohydrates and proteins to get good sleep.

Most people don't get adequate sleep for their
busy schedule. But, sleep deprivation destroys
not only physical health, but also mental health.

When you wake up, drink some warm milk, or try to read for awhile. Anything that relaxes you should work.
