Absinthe is this herbal form of grain alcohol that was especially popular among artists in Europe around 1900. Many of the great painters of that time (Van Gogh, Renoir, etc) were said to have been regular drinkers of absinthe. A modern version of this drink is available today, but I must admit I'm a bit skeptical.

I've heard that absinthe is very inspirational to artists and creative people, but I've also heard that it causes brain damage of some kind. Any words of wisdom on this? Or better yet... Anyone care to share some of their personal experiences with absinthe?

True story...
last Christmas I had a room-mate. He was gay, and perhaps that had something to do with this... he obsessed on a Christmas tree and I let him decorate my entire home in a 'theme". It was "Carnation", I saw pink. I was cool. I never said a word.He went to a party and drank absinthe and when he came home he started a fight with everyone who was in the house, grabbed his precious Barbie tree right out of the stand, and dragged it to the dumpster....
I think it has hallucinogenic properties. That ***** was out of his mind!

Actually, absinthe is an anise-flavored spirit derived from flowers and leaves of the plant Artemisia absinthium, also called wormwood.

Way back in the day, absinthe was portrayed as a dangerously addictive, psychoactive drug. The trouble with Absinthe is that there are elements of wormwood that are poisonous, and thus it is banned for production and sale in the USA.

If you buy any absinthe here in the US, it is either illegal, or it doesn't contain any wormwood ingredients (and thus, it's psychoactive properties).

Pros: Alcohol is fun, and trying new drinks has always been fun for me. I didn't have a horrible experience with absinthe when I tried it while living in Europe.

Cons: Poison? That's pretty serious. I didn't know much about it when I drank it in Germany... Now that I know it could contain poisonous material, though... I'll be steering clear.

I drank absinthe in Prague when I was backpacking last summer. I didn't really hallucinate or anything, but after 3 shots I was done for the night! I've also heard you can hallucinate though, I just didn't drink enough. I think there is a reason it's illegal in the U.S. though.

I was in Germany and tried absinthe. I really wanted to hallucinate, didn't do much of anything though except really mess me up after 6 shots. I never throw up, but absinthe made me throw up after a while. It tastes like really strong medicine....I want to do it again though!!!

I've tried it a couple of times...It's legal in Canada with higher concentrations of the stuff that makes it good. It's different, really strong odd flavour. It's not dangerous though, as long as you can trust where you got it from. Just watch how much you drink your first time to know what you'll do lol.

I would equate the buzz from the thujonge (sp) in absinth to a mellow shroom trip. Research your source before you purchase - boat load of fake, strong, booze with no thujonge - what's the point of that? Enjoy, I always do.
