My uncle has a big one on his front right ribcage and it didn't really bother him much until recently. Now it's very painful to the touch for him. What could this mean? He's already seen a doctor and the doctor told him it's harmless. Could he be wrong and could this be turning into cancer?

If there is a sudden change in anything it is a problem, it could be a simple absess but it needs to be checked again and if its that painful it should be removed.......we don't have to live with pain.

He could have rolled on it an caused some bleeding which is now tender.
Tenderness can be a reason to remove a lipoma in most insurance plans. Also could get a microscopic look at it to make sure is not cancer.
Cancer and lipomas "liposarcoma" are very rare and usually are in the thigh.
Try to get a second opinion for piece of mind.
