Christians tell us that Jesus died to pay for the sins of humanity. They also tell us that Jesus is somehow one with God. It seems to me that the execution of Jesus amounts to God offering a divine/human sacrifice to God. If so, why would God sacrifice to himself? Why did sin have to be paid for? Why couldn't God forgive sin without having himself killed?

because JESUS is the ultimate sacrifice. And Jesus died to pay for our sins so we don't have to do offering like burning the goat or lamb and we don't have to go to the high priest like what they used to in old testament,(catholics going to the confessional..) and we can go boldly in His throne and ask for his forgiveness.
And if JESUS didn't save us this world had been long destroy.

By His own design, the wages of sin is death.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Since the fall of man, we have been impure. Tempted by Lucifer the Arch Angel known as Satan. In the Old Testament sacrifices were made through animals. They were never enough. God sent His son to die as a pure sacrifice for all sin, thus beating death. Those who accept Jesus as the only begotten son fo God the Father are forgiven and accepted into Heaven.

I hope this helps some. If you have some more great questions like this, I do suggest calling a local Christian church and telling them you want an appointment with the pastor to ask him direct questions.

Merry Christmas

First and fore most, Jesus and God aren't the same. Jesus is God's son.Like you said Jesus was offered up as a sacrifice to pay for human sins so how could God offer up himself.

Jesus was not killed He laid down His life as a ransom for for all of us. At the cross Jesus by His own will gave up His spirit. God has laid down a law that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. The sacrifice for sins must be someone without sin. Only Jesus, God's Son, who became man is without sin. God therefore out of His great love for us and being the God of justice he has to comply with His own law allowed His Son to be offered as a sacrifice for us all. By doing this God is just and righteous in setting us free from sin by the supreme sacrifice of His Son. God as the God of justice has to play by His own rules.

Because of the justice of God. God is holy and righteous. He gave a commandment and it was broken. The penalty was death. God is just and cannot simply excuse sin. Jesus took our sin upon himself and died in our place so the we might be made just before God. God cannot forgive sin in the sense of just letting it go and overlooking it, but he love sinful man so much that he was willing to give his only begotten Son on the cross.

"For God so love the world the he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life."

The Bible says that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.

Jesus died in our place and rose from the dead. God has appointed him the judge of all mankind. God is just. He did not excuse sin, but took the burden on himself so that we might be forgiven and reconciled to God. God offers us the free gift of his forgiveness and the free gift of his righteousness, if we are willing to repent and believe in Christ. You can believe in your own right way of doing things. This is self righteousness. Or you can trust the Lord and his righteousness which he will freely give to you. This righteousness is in the Lord Jesus Christ.

"He who knew no sin became sin that we might become the righteousness of God in him."

Jesus came to die so that we might live. This life is in him. This is what Christmas is all about.

God bless you. Have a merry Christmas!

Jesus died so we could be reseurrected? He is not God, but the son of God? He has to suffer for all of our sins? We will go to heaven if we have faith in Jesus? It's unnecessary to follow the bible if we believe in Jesus? Jesus=savior? Father, son and Holy Spirit are one? All of these questions about the foundational stone of their main doctrine.

The question should not be why was he killed, but why did god wait so long to do it. How many times did he punish humanity almost to the point of extinction. Jesus could have arrived long before Noah's flood, maybe after Cain's failed offering.

It's meant to show that only something that great could forgive the world's sin & that God loved people enough to sacrifice his son to do so

Because sin deserves punishment. Just like a good judge will punish murders, and rapists. If God just forgived sinners, without some kind of payment then he would be corrupt.

God is holy. God is just. "Righteousness and Justice are the Foundations of His Throne" (Psalm 89:14)
Suppose I killed your mother and God just said "Oh forget about it"
God has pronounced judgment on Lucifer and destined him to the lake of fire. Lucifer, become Satan, has seduced all of mankind and come back in God's face and said "OK God, but if you send me, you will have to send them too."
God in His infinite wisdom and mercy devised a plan whereby He could be both "just, and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus" (Romans 3:26)
When Abraham was about to offer up his son Isaac to God and Isaac asked his father "Where is the lamb for the sacrifice?" Abraham's response was "My son, God shall provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering"
This He did in Jesus Christ, who came "to give His soul a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28).
As it was prophesied by Isaiah, 700 years earlier "Surely our griefs he himself bore, and our sorrows he carried; yet we ourselves esteemed him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. But he was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening that went for our peace fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed. ALL OF US, like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way, and the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him." (Isaiah 53:4-6)
