It is not un-common for dogs to eat their own poop. It is not good for them but will not harm them.

There are some products you can buy at either Petsmart or Petco....or from your Vet. The one that the vet has is called Forbid and it is a powder that you put on their food for a certain number of days. It makes their stool taste really bad and discourages them from doing it further.

THe vet stuff is more expensive than if you bought it at the petstore and it is basically the same stuff.

Good Luck. You really should break your pup of the habbit as it is bad. :-)

Ah, yes. The age-old question. Is it a deficiency? Behavioral?
Is he cleaning his own yard? Who knows... but it's nasty. There are products for that. However, some weirdo dogs actually like that stuff! Short of walking hiim on a leash every time and picking it up right away, there probably isn't a sure-fire cure. I do know that plenty of dogs do it, and are completey healthy. Is he on a medication that may have altered the smell or taste of his poo? That has often been a cause. I say try Forbid. It can't hurt.
Good luck with that!

It does not make them sick.

It's actually a very natural thing for a dog to do.

When a mother dog is with her young, she cleans up after the puppies to keep the area clean, that means she eats their stools.

If you don't want your dog to do this, simply distract the dog in a fun happy sounding voice and praise/treat the dog when the dog gives its' attention to you.

I've never heard of it being lethal...but still you should discourage the behavior because it could make your dog sick. I have heard of people saying there are products you can buy to discourage this behavior...but i suggest you simply pick up after your dog more often.

Dogs do this to "defend their territory," and is most common after dogs give birth to puppies or are around other dogs. Petsmart makes something you can give your dog to keep them from doing this and it works really well!! Dogs cannot die from this, but it can make them really sick due to all the bacteria. You might want to try that medicine out!

while it's just plain nasty, most dogs cannot get sick from eating their own poo. talk to your vet they can give you a product sometimes called forbid. or give you a dosage of aldoph's meat tenderizer. but are a powder you can sprinkle on your dogs food that make it unappetizing to most dogs when excreted in their poo.

He'll be fine. They eat their own vomit , too. That's why they are called "dogs".
It makes you feel sorry for the owners who kiss their dogs in the mouth, doesn't it? LOL

hahaha bro, don't worry bout it. I had a black lab and he ate his stuff allllll the time. It's just a nasty habbit they have that's really hard to controll. But, what might work is if you put some hot sauce on one of his turds, wait for him to eat it. That'll teach him a lesson, won't hurt him, and it's kind of funny (no I'm not cruel, I just love hot sauce, I loved my dog VERY VERY much). Make sure to give him some water afterwards of course =P.

my cocker spaniel eats its own **** daily and has been around for three years. just think, it's an endless cycle - you don't have to feed the animal anymore.

Actually, there is something you can buy at the pet store that makes the poop extremely undesirable to your canine.

It's not healthy, but it's not unheard of either. Ask your vet for FOR-BID or DETER. It something you put on their food for a few days that will stop them from eating their own feces.

AVOID KISSES AT ALL COST !!!
