I know it is overused, but IT DEPENDS...

Determine who you plan on targeting or positioning your new product for. Will it be to trendy teens or colledge students, perhaps to working mothers or business men.

Once you have determined this. Evaluate how the decision to purchase similar products is made. Does your target market make their purchase decision based on what their friends are doing or maybe their spouses will be making the purchase decision for them.

Use this info to then position the product and your message in a way that will be attractive to that target market. You might need to be creative in determining how message will be found by your target market. Early on that might mean doing what you can with a limited budget, such as posting fliers or somehow convincing a retailer where you believe your target market would frequent, to try to carry your product. You could offer an incentive to the retailer that they only need to pay for the items that sell and then offer a generous margin to the retailer. In this scenerio the retailer would have nothing to loose in carrying your product (unless of coarse your product doesn't sell and then you need to either change your product or change who you are positioning it for).

Good luck in your endevours. It can be done. There is a company called Verra Bradley (spelling?). This was a company started by a couple of women who saw a need in the market for a new type of bags for women and they had tremendous success. You might want to try to find their story. Best of luck.

Read Justin Herald's ATTITUDE book, it's awesome and will help you so much. This guy turned his t-shirt idea with $50 into a 10 milion dollar company.
THe key is to create demand.

Can you draw up the designs and make samples of them. Perhaps you can get a locally own retailer to sponsor them as their own unique brand. That would be a great opportunity for them and for you.

hit up the stores you envision your product in and see if they would help you test market it. I would try small independent stores first as opposed to corporate ones.
