A hotel usually takes your credit card number to hold a reservation, takes an imprint at check in, and completes the full transaction charged at check out. Having traveled a lot I would say about 75% of the time I have not paid a dime until checking out.

Like I say, that is the usual. There are some cheaper rates where they charge the whole amount to your credit card when you book it. Also some other systems that happen from time to time. Part depends if you are using a hotel website or a travel agent type website. Them taking a small deposit when booking is slightly unusual, but does happen.

The answer to your question should have been given to you at the time you made your booking. Check your booking confirmation for the terms of your booking. As has been said, each hotel or booking agent is different; some will charge you the amount in full at the time of booking like Expedia; Travelodge also charges the full amount at the time of booking for its saver rates. Others will take a deposit and take the rest of the payment at the hotel and others will take the entire payment during your stay.
I would imagine that in your case, the deposit will be all you will pay until you actually stay at the hotel. A deposit is usually taken to guarantee your room. If you cancel, you may or may not be able to get the deposit back; this will be dependent on the terms of your booking. Payment of the rest of your bill may be requested either upon check-in at the hotel or unpon check-out. Again, this varies from hotel to hotel.
If you received an e-mail confirmation of your booking, all of the payment details should be documented therein. If you still are not sure, maybe you should phone the company with which you made the booking; it should be able to answer your queries.

It might depend on the site. I reserved two hotels for January and the money came right out of my credit card the next day (this was with orbitz.com).

I thought the cc usually just reserves the room and doesn't get money taken out until we check out, but I guess some places are different.
