For shooting skill. It is not even close, And Olympic shooter is far above the level of a military sniper. Olympic shooters are basically putting all the rounds they fire, through the exact same hole. In terms of shooting skills, there is no comparison. Otherwise, you would see ex military snipers on the olympic teams. or you would see military snipers on the services shooting teams, which you don't. 2. It is two completely different types of shooting. So there is no comparison. 3. Its like the silly argument you see here, who would win a fight, a professional MMA fighter or someone in spec ops. You see people say spec ops all the time, which is just plain silly. If it were true, you would see ex spec ops, making huge money in the UFC.

Well Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä nicknamed "White Death" is credited with between 505 official to 542 kills against Soviet soldiers, snipers, and countersnipers.
For American style sniping Carlos Hathcock is the prototype with 93 confirmed Vietnam kills and a 2,250 meter confirmed kill, the longest on record until the now popular use of .50BMG rifles
The longest confirmed kill is 2,430 meters - 1.5 miles
Snipers are so effective because their primary objective is not sniping, it is reconnaissance. They are trained to sneak into highly patrolled areas and stay there undetected for days observing and advising. Also they have extensive training in ballistics they know exactly how far, fast, and what path of flight any round they fire will travel. Hard to stop an adversery that can kill with one shot from a mile and yet not be seen from 5 yards.

It's because of the high-caliber gun, that's all. I mean, a laser-guided missile is accurate from thousands of miles away. Sophisticated technology takes the credit.
The caliber of a military sniper rifle (So big it's not really a rifle) is so high that targets liquify when hit. Seriously. Recall how many times you've seen an actual person hit by a military sniper rifle. None, because it's typically gruesome.
An army-grade sniper rifle looks more like a turret. It's huge, and set on a tripod, and the sniper lays on his belly (To reduce visibility). Since it can't quickly be moved, there is a spotter who simply has long-range binoculars to help find targets.

some snipers can shoot targets at 1000 yards, but there is no best sniper. all snipers are limited by being human.
The way a sniper conceils himself and carries out shooting is a much better judge of talent.
Oh, and a standard sniper round is a .308, which is a hunting rifle that is very widely used. There are a handful of .50cal, but those are difficult to fire and draw too much attention because the muzzle blast creates a cloud of dust, which does not happen with a 308.

In memory of the old Master, Carlos Hathcock. Years back the Sharps .50-140 (Quigley) was the sniper rifle of choice, then the Basic Model 700 in 30.06, .308, and all it's variations, but the best by far now is the Barrett .50 series. It uses the basic 750 grain .50 caliber Browning MG round, 1000 meter kills pretty routine now. It's still the training though...

First it is the ability to control your resparation, heart rate and TOTALLY FOCUS upon the target.
The ability to stay in one position for 72 hours plus while nasty ants and bugs crawl up you butt and NOT scratch, EVER!
The rounds are mission specific based upon the distance and environment; more or less grains to maximize distance, drop, muzzle flash and the abilitity to stay COVERT! Take the shot, accomplish the mission and GET OUT undectected.
I served with a guy, his call was "peepsight" and he could shoot the eye out of a running rooster at a click. He also saved my life!
I was on an op and a woman was ready to take my head off with a machette. I heard a "poof" and the woman fell on me. He nailed her right between the eyes from over 200 yards in the dead of night.
When we got back we would get together and "peepsight" would put a rubber band on a yard stick and shoot flies on the wall after 9 beers; he NEVER MISSED.
I qualified as expert, but this guy made me look like a goof in the SH%^.
The short answer is the piece and the MAN behind it makes a deadly combination.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Military snipers are extensively trained in not only proper marksmanship, but also in concealment, stalking, reconnaisance and surveillance.
One of the best snipers in the world was US Marine Corps Scout Sniper Sgt. Carlos Hathcock, who has 96 confirmed kills under his belt, including one kill with a .50 caliber machine gun at a target 2,250 meters away. The record stood unchallenged for 35 years, until March 2002 during Operation Anaconda, when a five-man sniper team from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry set two new world records for farthest combat kill with a rifle. First, Master Cpl. Arron Perry broke the old record set by Hathcock by hitting an al-Qaeda forward observer from a distance of 2,310 metres (over 1.43 miles). Days later, Perry's sniper teammate Cpl. Rob Furlong set the current world record by firing a shot from a .50 cal McMillan Tac-50 sniper rifle that killed an al-Qaeda soldier at an estimated distance of 2,430 metres (over 1.5 miles).
All snipers are trained in the same set of basic skills; stalking, reconnaisance, target ecquisition and designation (by virtue of importance), marksmanship and stealth.

The guy or gal that can write about what is really going on in Iraq. The government procasts are so distorted that they must be more about hiding the truth than they are hiding any military secrets.
When these crooks and idiots get done in 2008, we will have to divert the Mississippi River and let run through the Whitehouse for at least a year in the hope that the River will wash it and will get the stink out of it!
