Singing IS a sport! You perform for an audience, you practice daily, you have to train your muscles, you have to hone your techinical craft, you have to avoid certain things which could negatively affect your performance, you have to know your movements, and your movements in relation to other singers (just like plays in sports!), you can attain stardom and earn a lot of money, but most singers/athletes don't... the parallels are incredible. Some singers are overpaid considering their talent, but I would say that applies to many athletes as well.
"Athletes actually have to work hard."
Singers actually have to work hard, too.

I personally think that people think that singing takes no ability, and when I was little I used to thik that anyone could be a singer and that voice lessons were a waste... Now, I am an aspiring opera singer, very challanging, but amazing, and agree that people seem to think that just anyone can sing.. Singing takes high discipline.. Sure, Hillary Duff type singing doesn't take much work, but I will not put down a fellow artist.. All I can say is pop artists are way overpaid and opera singers are NOT given enough credit.
And singing is not just your voice and that it takes hard work to develop a beautiful instrument,,,, I can however appreciate that you mean singers that have no talent and that are just famous because their pretty, then yes they are overpaid.. But the regular singer is not overpaid, and yes we work hard..
Okay, I will also add that I got paid 300 dollars for singing the national anthem at a college graduation last year and I sang it 3 times in that day, great pay.. However I did work hard, and I think you should get paid for the calabur of work you put in.. And yes singers have a more challanging job than piano players, the notes are just laid right in front of them.. So if you're a piano player you'll know that you have to sing back or play back a melody when you take a practical exam, well for singing you can sing back, and OMG, when you sight sing, it's so hard.... Nothing like sight reading,, So think again when you think singers are overpaid (which in some sense they are) and think how much work they put into developing there voice.!!!
Cheers! And merry christmas~

Singing IS hard work, and requires muscle strength, coordination, and energy. The amount of each required depends upon your voice type (females have an easier time than males because of less vocal mass), as well as where the singing lies with respect to your passaggio, or break point -- that is to say, the tessitura of the music.
Training the voice is much like training the body for sports, only it requires more than just strength and agility -- it requires a great deal of coordination, pinpoint precision, and special attention to the delicate tissues that it is made of. Additionally, if these tissues are injured, unlike in sports, there is no way to surgically recover the voice, and most result in permanent and irreparable damage to the instrument.
As for money, can we agree that both professional atheletes AND pop singers are overpaid? I mean, what do either contribute to society as a whole, other than just mindless entertainment????

most well paid "singers" lip sinc. the hard work is usually done by their managers who form bands, do lots of publicity, hire the best writers, make sure everything runs smoothly, and sometimes bribe the radio stations.
athletes in most sports have trouble cheating that much. If you run faster than everyone else, you're likely to win.
If you sing better than everyone else, you may still be asking for spare change on a street corner.
But if you think making it as a singer is so easy, then go for it.
Some athletes have more natural talent, and don't have to work as hard as others. It also depends on which sport.
I think sports in general are more fair than music in general, regarding pay and all that.
Doing anything well takes hard work. But with lip sinc tricks, modern technology, and everything else involved, you don't have to be a good singer to make a living from it.

I think that singing can require hard work, especially when singing out of your comfort zone, or for a long time, especially if you're not used to it.
Singers and athletes are both overpaid compared to some other highly necessary and less-desirable fields of employment.

Well, proper singing takes a huge amount of work - singing requires two major muscles that must stay in shape if you're going to be able to sing in a way that people will want to listen.
1. The Diaphragm - this muscle supports your singing - if you don't sing using this muscle for support, you might as well forget it - you won't get anything out, you'll be flat, and your tone will be horrible.
2. Your vocal chords(actually folds) - the smallest thing can damage them - screaming, shouting - if you're not careful, you can ruin your singing voice for good - then there's the vocal flexibility you need to be able to do difficult things - just like a quarterback who needs to exercise his arm muscles to be able to throw a precise pass, a vocalist must exercise their vocal folds in order to be precise on certain passages.

It depends, which singers are you talking about? If you're talking about the ones who basically rely on computers to make them sound decent then I suppose so, with a few exceptions... However if you're talking about the singers who actually sing and work, then NO! It takes years of trainging to get the range classical singers posess, and it takes a long time to build up the power that broadway singers have to project their voices so that the entire audience can hear them!
It takes a lot of time, responsability, dedication, practice, and a bit of natural ability(by this I mean having a nice voice that can at least be trained to sound plesant). It takes ages to train your voice properly, and you need to to be careful not to abuse it or you might just lose it. For example, there are certain foods that you should avoid because they cause build ups in the muscous membrane. Also you need to becareful when it's cold outside so you don't damage your thraot. The smallest thing can damage your vocal chords, whispering, yelling or screaming. You need to practice to strengthen your voice so you can sing for longer periods of time and so you can hit the notes you need to wether they be high or low notes. Not to mention you need to constantly practice to try to avoid tensing up when you preform, because if you tense up you sure aren't going to be singing nicely, you'll be lucky to sqwak out a few notes before you can't sing anymore!
It actually does take a lot of hard work to become a singer, or a musician of any kind for that matter! You can't just wake up one day and think 'hey, I think I'm going to go out there and become famous for singing/playing (insert name of instrument here)' you need to learn the fundamentals and then work your way up.
Sorry about that ^^; I tend to get irritated when people say singing doesn't require hard work...

The word is "overpaid", and it depends on which singer you are talking about. Opera singing is extremely challenging, and it isn't always just about singing. Sometimes its about entertaining an audience. There are lots of great singers, but not everybody can entertain a crowd. If you can do both, that is when you might earn the big bucks.

singing takes a lot of you. it may look easy, but believe you and me it's tough. i have to warm up my voice and i practice 4 hours for 5 days. I have to learn the music and on top of that memorize it and also try to figure out how I am going to perform it. At the end of the day I am exhausted.
