Fresh blood is RED, old blood dark to almost black in color.
If its fresh RED, you could have a hemorrhoid or "roids" as we call them, or fissures inside the anus that can erupt from lack of enough fiber in your diet. Do you sit a lot ? Lack of exercise?
Are you straining when you take a dump? Well, QUIT DOING IT.
You need to get more fiber in your diet and see if this helps. Easy to loose stools really help with a hemorrhoid condition. Any sharp quick pains before you see blood in the water could be "roids". Some medications can cause a person to pass some blood in the stool as well. Try some of these things and if it continues or gets worse go see your family doctor for guidance and an examination.

There are a few things it can be, all are serious, she needs to get checked out, if she waits too long, it can turn into something more serious. Does she have any other symptoms? Is the blood dark red or bright red? How long has it been happening? Tell her to go to a health care clinic, one of those walk-in type, they are usually only like a flat rate of $170 or something (at least they are here on the west coast) when you dont have insurance. Depending on her other symptoms, if she has any, it potentially can be chrones disease, colon cancer, ulcer in her intestines.. umm Im trying to thing what else they said potentially it could be when I went in, those are all I can remember, but the specialists I saw assured me how serious an issue this is. Try not to let your friend take it too lightly. Good luck to you both, Toni Lynne :)

If you can see red blood then it is coming from your lower GI. It likely could be an anal tear or hemmoride. A dark tarry stool is from blood higher in the bowel and that usually means a bleed from the bowel or small intestines. In the case of a dark tarry stool, colon cancer must be ruled out. Again if it is bright red or very visible blood, then maybe you simply need to increase soluble fiber in your diet to soften your stools.
