It's for my grandmother she needs a dog that is small, quiet, calm, and that doesn't need to go out side a lot. What breed is best for Her.

I think you need an older, mature dog for your grandmother. I'd go to the humane society or watch the ads. There's no such thing as a calm puppy and your grandmother could give a dog a nice home. I don't think breed specifics will help you, and unfortunately, small breeds are sometimes hard to get at the humane society--maybe get yourself on some waiting lists?

Some really good small dog breeds are the pug, schnauzer, scottish terrier, shih tzu, yorkshire terrier, cocker spanniel, pekingese, and the bichon frise.

As a side note, here are some facts to help your choice. Pugs, while they are extremely cute, their prices are not, they can be very pricey. Schnauzers, scottish terriers are very protective breeds, and would make a good ankle bitting guard dog. Shih tzu dogs typically have long coats that need regular attention, and the daily grooming could get to be hard on the hands, and may make things especially hard if your grandmother has arthritis. Yorkshire terriers, are great guard dogs despite their size, they need regular grooming, but have perfected the art of being a couch potato. Cocker spanniels have a short coat, and need only basic exercise. Pekingese, have a longer coat that needs grooming, they have an energetic bark, and are sometimes prone to eye infections. Bichon frise dogs will require grooming. By grooming, I basically mean that you need to run a brush through, nothing more special than that.I would suggest an older dog, maybe a year or two old, that is trained and friendly. Puppies will have too much energy, and require more energy from the owner. Also, in the holiday spirit, I suggest you check at your local animal shelter, humane society, or anti-cruelty association. These organizations strive to find a second chance for great animals, that may have had a sad start to their life. These animals are in need of a good home, are often trained, and typically have recieved their yearly vaccinations and have been spayed. Good luck in your dog search, and I hope that, no matter what breed, your grandmother loves it and it brings joy to her life.

I'd check out the King Charles Spaniel, or other small breeds in the Spaniel group. You may want to look for an older rescue dog (2+ years), as dogs tend to calm down a lot and will already be housetrained.

A puppy is a ton of work and may not be the best idea for your grandmother.

you need to find a dog that is not a puppy and one that someone has already trained. the best thing you can do is go to a shelter and talk to the personel there and they can match a dog with what you are looking for. any breed can be taught to be calm. but dogs also need their exercise in order to be calm dogs. you need to be available to walk and exercise this dog if your grandmother can't do so, or hire someone to come over a few times a day to do this for her. also plan on paying for vet visits and a way to get the dog to vet for your grandmother. there is no "breed" in particular that spings to mind, any breed or mixture can be taught these things. as for going outside a dog needs to go out as often as it needs to go out, plan to have someone that can take this dog outside for your grandmother. good luck

I'm not sure that it's necessarily going to be a "small dog" thing to be calm. Pretty much all puppies are hyper and active. You might want to look into adopting from the Humane Society (or Pound) or from a rescue place. Small breed puppies are going to need to go out a lot, and will be hyper and loud.

The King Charles Cavaliers are the best lap dogs.

I would suggest a cocker spaniel, or, even better, a cavalier king charles spaniel. But, I would highly suggest you do some research on breeds that you are interested in. Cavaliers are very calm, affectionate, lap-dog type dogs. Check your local SPCA.

I would suggest a Yorkie or Maltese, but since it is for your Grandmother, I would try to find an already potty trained adult in whatever breed that you choose.

Adopt an older toy dog from the pound. Puppies of any breed are hyper.

pug i have two and they are both not hyper. but i must tell you that all small breeds need to go potty alot more then big dogs. but both are quiet and dont bark unless someone is as the door(but all dogs bark at that). they are also (love starved) . my pug maggie begs to sit in my lap all day and would be content sitting there all day. she actually gets mad at my dad and stares at him when he wont sit in the lazy boy chair they share. (both of them dont snort like crazy like people assume)
