Firstly, note that any sincere practice is lifelong. Peace of mind is progressive and it takes a long time to undo the conditioning (thankfully, there are significant milestones and achievements along the way that can be had pretty rapidly). As for the book, I don't know -- I liked A Course in Miracles but it's a mind-training book that represents a significant investment in a particular path. I also liked Zen but it's an investment as well.
