how do you change an object's layers in autocad?

A couple ways.

Probably the easiest:
Pick the object, then pull down the layer drop-down in the toolbar and select the layer you wish to change it to.

You can also pick the object, right click and bring up the properties dialog box and change the layer there.

There are also several ways to do it from the command line...
