What is supposed to happen is the cleaning crew picks them up off the floor and seats and puts a new cover on them, as well as picking up the trash and wiping the trays.
I did this for several years back in the 70's as a part time job.
What sucked back then was emptying the ash trays, yuck! The smoking section was also the filthiest section. Nowadays, it's the business or first class.
One other thing on the post below, the covers are made to throw away, they aren't washable.

I don't know what is worse -- airline pilows and blankets, or hotel comforters. Hotels change the sheets daily, but the comforters are another story -- and I KNOW some of the things I've done when first hitting a hotel room and too "busy" to pull down the covers.
Hotel telephones and TV remotes are the worst though. They NEVER get cleaned. Ever go to use the phone or remote and the buttons stick?
I guess it all just builds up your tolerance for feces and semen...
Gross, but true. ;)

If you notice that all the pillows have covers over them no matter what class you are in. It is cheaper for the airlines to just wash the covers and re-use the actual pillows instead of not spending money on buying covers and just buying new pillows all the time. (its all about money and the covers cost money, but they are cheaper then the pillows)

they're reused... so are the blankets... for like 6-8 flights.. then they take them out
it's gross
dateline did a thing about it - airplane blankets have feces and semen on them... which is gross (but basically everything has feces and semen on it according to dateline) but what is even worse is that pink eye bacteria is all over them... so don't put them near your eye.
