We have a 8 month old Brittany Spaniel who never seems to run out of energy. Especially at night. None of us have gotten a decent night of sleep in a while. I can usually fall asleep anywhere, any time, but something about his incessant whining keeps me up.

Is there anything I can do, give him, or otherwise to put him to sleep?

If they don't have a good bed, try getting a really comfy one. Also you can try watching TV somewhere and put the dog on the couch and it might eventually fall asleep, that's how my dog falls asleep.

Just a few thoughts:

The dog know this bothers you and that's why he/she does it. Dogs are very smart.

Question: are you socializing the dog? Dogs really need to get plenty of time to be dogs in order to feel good. Dog parks are very helpful this way, but you need to be sure your dog listens to you. This may or may not be good for your 8-month old puppy, only you can determine this, our 7-month old dog loves them.

Have you read Cesar's Way by Cesar Milan? He is an advocate (and I am a believer) that a happy dog is an exhausted dog :)

I work and my son goes to school, so we make sure the dog gets a good walk in the morning, when we get home, and at night. We also have many neighbors with dogs, so we try to get over to see at least one "doggy friend" every day (while the weather is good) so they can run around the yard.

Also, we have great games of "doggy in the middle" in our kitchen with a ball, or a favorite toy, so the dog can get plenty of fun with us.

By the end of the night, both the dog (and the son) are pretty tired.

With an 8-month old puppy, they have so much energy, your goal is to give them plenty of opportunity to sleep (hopefully at night) and to play as much as possible.

You can also try a hot water bottle in the crate with the dog, a ticking product (a clock or something similar) and a nice stuffed animal to keep them company.

Our neighbors have a 4-month old sheepdog who loves the dehumidifyer, so they moved the crate next to it. The dog sleeps wonderfully since they did. I've also heard that some people swear by putting the dog in a crate in their bedroom.

So, try to find something that will take up the energy of the dog while everyone is awake (walks, ball games, frisbee, etc.) and use a crate and find a place that the dog will be satisfied.

Good luck!

I make sure that my dogs are comfy (in their crate) about 1 hour before I want to go to bed. I also turn on a radio or TV to make some noise so that they cannot hear me as well. You can also try giving him a frozen Kong toy at night (I put dog food, treats, and peanut butter in them and then stick them in the freezer in the morning) when you want to go to bed, so it will keep your dog busy until you fall asleep, the fact that it is frozen will keep him busy a little longer than a unfrozen one.

he should be in a crate at night...a wind up clock works good to quiet them...the ticking sounds like a heartbeat to them. At 8 months the dog should Be settled and sleeping right through the night without a peep, so you have some work to do. I'm thinking it must be running loose at night?? Huge mistake...crate train.

you know putting a tv in the room sometimes helps. also take her for a long walk before bed and try and keep her up during the day. maybe you need to get another dog i know i had that problem with my puppy now she has a buddy and it quiet as a mouse. also dont check on her everytime she whines she needs to know its okay to be alone.

You don't say where you expect your dog to sleep. Dogs are social animals.

When my mother's puppy wouldn't go to sleep in the kitchen area, she brought her crate into the bedroom and she slept soundly there.

Or, since dogs like something warm to cuddle up with, give him a hot water bottle.

When I lived at home, the dogs slept with the kids with no problems.

Take him for a long walk, run him if you can before bed. Play with him, get him really tired. Then put him in his crate. If you can put the crate near your bed so he can see you. He may be whining because he is lonely. If he whines ignore him he should settle down if he is tired out.

Put him next to your bed in its bed and sing to it or you can leave the dog in a room and give it some alone time and try not to be loud or it will think it is missing out on all the excitement.

Make sure he gets lots of daytime excercise and keep him on schedule. Don't let him take naps during the day, etc. A dog eight months old shouldn't have this problem really--unless you mean eight weeks.

Make sure he comfortable, soft bed, warm blanket. I would put some stuffed animals in with him and scatter a few pieces of dog food for him, make sure he has water. See if that works. And good luck.
