The hybrid marijuana, known as "Columbian," can be grown at any time of year and has roots that can survive being treated with herbicides. This means that the new plants don't fall into the semiannual growing cycles that authorities previous used to time their sweeps, and the previous methods of destroying the plants are ineffective. The plants also grow much more densly, leading to higher yields, and smaller fields that are easier to hide. These characteristics are all examples of hybrid vigor, or heterosis, a phenomon that occurs when a hybrid organism exhibits characteristics that are stronger than those of the parent species.

The exact methods are unclear, but this "hybrid" marijuana has been engineered to be resistant to pesticides. Normally, the government will spray the crops with a crop-duster or burn the crop. With this new species, the plant will not die unless it is pulled up by the root.
