Accidents do happen. Just because he messed in the crate does not mean he has forgotten all of his housebreaking training. The two probable explanations are as follows:

1) It was an accident. As puppies, they cannot physically hold that much liquid in their bladders. Perhaps he was in the crate longer than normal. Typically, dogs will do whatever they can to not go in the crate, but as the saying goes, 'when you got to go, you got to go.'

2) The crate is too large. The reason dogs typically refrain from messing the crate is the fact that the crate is their home where they sleep. No dog wants to sleep in pee. So they hold it. However, where the crate is too large, i.e., the dog can avoid the mess by moving to the other end of the crate, the dog will not have the same motivation to keep the entire crate clean. If he is in a crate that is too large, you can buy an adjustable crate insert that will shrink the crate to a more appropriate size.

Applaud the fact that he's been doing well so far. Check to make sure the crate is the proper size. Think about cutting back on water intake prior to crating him.

Good luck

You have done everything right. By cleaning out his crate you got rid of the scent. Now just watch him more closely. Many puppies this age can't hold it through the night.

at this age, they really don't know it's wrong. keep working w/ him & he'll get it. how big is the crate? they will not usally pee where they have to lay. maybe the crate is to big? it should only be big enough to stand & turn around. hope this helps. :) oh, & marry x-mas!
