Here's the deal; I've been getting tattoos for the last five years now, and my father still doesn't know. He's seen me live in front of thousands of people (he was in the back...old guy), and didn't see any of my ink. He says that if I get any tattoos that he would disown me; I'm far from being "untatted", but I want to tell him. My career calls for tats and piercings, and if I don't, I'm the "outcast". What do I do? Do I crush his spirit, or do I continue lying to him?

there isn't any reason you should have to tell him now..know the saying "what they don't know won't hurt them"? but if you feel the urge to tell him, then go ahead. he will be hurt at first, but then he will get over it. he is your FATHER

Old fashioned parents.. Gotta love it.
I'd go ahead and tell him, if I were you. Make it seem like you just got the ink done a couple of weeks ago.. Parents get pissed when they find out you've been hiding things like that for years, you know? Just make sure you explain the origins and reasons behind the tats.. Every piece of ink has a story behind it; Make sure the Pops knows this. It'd be a much easier route to take than having Dad spot the ink at a show, or something. Sh!t would surely hit the fan, then.
Just wondering.. are you in a band? (Seems so, judging by your avatar). Now would be a good time for a plug, man.

I'm due to get my first tattoo on my back in June and i can't wait though i'm anxious about my low pain level. Anyway my perants hate the idea and so does my uncles because they have a few of their own which were foolishly home made. But damn your father go get it if he's old he'll probably be out of your hair soon, sorry but it's true. OR you could ask him his objections and get some sources from the internet cause he might think their still for drug dealers and hookers and we've obviously moved on since then. So explain get a few examples of famous people who are like a lawyer or something and show him their tattoos because he might be afraid people may not take you seriously cause of them. But seriously it's your life and reflect how much do you actually like him and how much do you see of him anyway?? Be a bit selfish. We're young!!

Tell him! I have a fairly old-school family (my grandparents raised me for the latter part of my youth), and while they think my tattoos are tottally stupid, they still love me and are proud of me. I have told them about all of them befoe I went to get them, and they have prayed for me during each! I find it amusing that they're trying to save my soul from the ink. The good thing about unconditional love is the "unconditional" part. No matter what Gram and Pap have said about my ink, they still think I'm the greatest "kid" ever. I'm sure your father will complain a while, but he'll love you just the same in the end.

I have old fashioned parents and inlaws but when they both learned I got ink they all wanted to see! I was the first in the family to actually get inked. If he loves you, he'll tell you you're stupid and what are you gonna do when you're 80! Say what I did...when I'm 80 I won't remember I have them! LOL

If he really loves you, he won't disown you. Tattooing is an art form that's been around for thousands of years and isn't going to go away because he hates them. If he can't accept that, that's HIS problem.
I'm with the old codger in vehement hate of tattoos, but I've accepted reality.

the decision is up to you and i really don't have an answer for you. my mother in law hates my tattoos and hates my husband's tattoos even more. and she blames me for him getting them. i think your father will come to accept you and your tattoos but it may take some time. good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Just ask him why he is so against it. If he happens to see them, tell him you understand how he feels and you have have had them for a long time.
