You're right. There are so many older kids who need parents to love them! Good for you for considering them as potential kids for yourself! We're actually thinking school aged, but any orphaned child adopted is one more out of the foster care system!

The same reason special needs children don't get adopted people don't want the problems. I commend you for considering adopting an older child just be prepaird to be patient and understanding some of these children who have been in the system for a long time have seen alot of cruelty and may have trust issues from being moved so much. Many emotional problems may not show up for years. If you decide its the right thing for you make sure you are willing to be there for this child if any problems do arise. I have a child who is DeafBlind and Delayed in development there is no greater joy than making her smile or hearing her laugh and every obstacle that we have to go through is minute compaired to on second of her happiness and knowing that I have in some way made her life better just by loveing her And Remember no Child is perfect because no parent is perfect.

Most people want babies for one of two reasons:
1-They can't have their own children and want a baby to raise from birth just like they would a biological child.
2-They are afraid that the older children will have issues and won't see them as their parents.
These reasons may not seem right to you but everyone is different, and in the case of #2, not everyone looks into the older children enough to learn that there are a lot who just need a loving home.
If you are looking to adopt older children, look into your local foster system. In California the Children's Protective Services also arranges adoptions of children whose parents have lost their parental rights.
When a child is placed in foster care the parents are given a set amount of time to fix themselves. There is a federal law that says that children under 3 must be in a permanent place within 6 months, sometimes extended to 12. In other words, a parent has 12 months to get their act together or they loose their parental rights and the child is eligible for adoption.
Try this link, I know someone who used them and they were very happy. (It's called Christian Family Connections but you don't have to be Christian to use this adoption agency.

because they want to raise them from a child. A lot is learned behaviorally the younger a kid is. Plus there are experiences that are hard to face that some of the older kids have gone through. It is sad. The system does seem flawed, but I personally would rather adopt a child as a baby not because they're really cute, but because they are more impressionable. They won't spend there whole life saying you're not my real parents or feeling like they don't belong or that something else is out there that's better.

Older children are more formed to someone else's ways. People want babies so they can make them more like themselves, more like the bio child they wanted. Even older children (teens) are usually from abusive homes and much harder to parent.
