I purchased this yesterday so it hasn't been sitting in my fridge for a week or anything. I took a sniff and it doesn't smell great, but when I've made recipes before with the shoulder, I haven't exactly bent down and taken a big whiff. Any advice would be great, the supermarket is closed and this dish is supposedly getting served tomorrow ... Thanks!

Thank you for your answers! I think ticklemeblue has it correct. A week ago there was one pork shoulder at the grocer with a dayleft sticker on it and yesterday there was still only one. Now I'm thinking it was the same one relabeled. Beggars should indeed be choosers. :) It was going to be a surprise, so I'll just pick another occasion to make the dish. I'll head back on the 26th to get my cash back. Thanks for the affirmations, guys.

Um...no...obviously they relabeled that piece of meat....Some stores do that...take off the outdated label and relabel...sorry, but I would not be able to eat that.

Was this a frozen roast? It almost sounds like frostbite. If it was frozen or partially frozen when you bought it,that might be the explanation. Also, when meat goes through inspection by the USDA they stamp a fatty section of the meat to prove it's been inspected with an off-blue color "USDA" Could that be what you are seeing? It could look green.... If ,after inspecting your meat closer and checking use by dates ,on the package, you are still not certain then prepare something else and place the meat back in your freezer until you can return it.

Eek, I would say throw it out. It sounds like it got spoiled and you said it doesn't smell good. It is better to be safe rather than sorry and get really sick. I'm sorry to say this but it's not worth getting sick over:( Do you have anything else you can make? My family is just making pasta with a salad because we had our fancy dinner tonight.

They sometimes mark the meat with natural ink- usually grape juice. Maybe the green is some kind of ink?
Smell it and if it smells good its probably safe. but i wouldn't eat the green stuff unless i was positive it was safe.
If you smelled it and it smelled bad, you got no choice- throw it out nobody wants to eat rotten meat

Throw it out or take it back when the supermarket is open again. You could make everyone sick if you serve it. It has gone bad.

Cut off the green parts and when you cook it make sure it's thoroughly cooked...
