the nicotine is the addictive part. I ahve smoked for over ten years and i was perscribed Chantix. After a week of taking this, i quit. Chantix blocks the nicotine recepter in your brain. Wonderful stuff. Plus its made by Pfizer, and they also make Viagra.

Why don't you find something else to get addicted to, like sports or a hobby or something? Cigarettes are definitely addictive- just ask anyone who has every smoked. I was talking with a client of mine yesterday who used to be a methamphetamine addict. Methamphetamine is a terrible drug- ruins people's health and lives. I asked her if it was hard to stop doing meth. She said that quitting smoking cigarettes was harder than quitting meth. Maybe you won't get hooked on just one cigarette. But, if you keep it up, you will get hooked on them. First one, then two, then three and before you know it, you are smoking a pack or two a day and can't ever quit, even if your girlfriend wants you to because she can't stand kissing a stinky ashtray.

They are addictive because they have a chemical called nicotine in them. You can stop smoking without the side effects by using nicotine gum or patches, but you need to gradually lower your use of them, or I suppose you could get addicted to them instead of the cigarettes.

I just quit from a new drug, called chantix, it really works, I smoked for 28 years, my Dr wanted me to try it, and I did, but I never dreamed I could quit. I gave up on that a long time ago. any how I didn't have with draws, but you have to be a long term smoker to use chantix. I watched a show on the history channel, and they showed all the additives, you would not believe what all they add to tobacco to make them more addictive. it is sick

There are certain chemicals in the cigarretes that make you addictive to them. (nicotine)

Once you started you try to compensate something in your life that you are lacking with the cigarretes, that is why is addictive.

It is a cultural habit: a very bad habit.

You see people smoking on the tv, so you want to smoke too.

You see ads everywhere, more of the same.

I have quit smoking around 100 times or more you keep trying until you do it.They have chemicals in the smokes that stimulates our brain and when we quit it makes us go crazy without a smoke. The best way is cold turkey and a support of some kind.Weather it be a friend that dozen;t smoke or treatment of some kind. That is the best way i am in treatment for 6months and i have a fiend that doesn;t smoke to help me though this and i have about 22days not smoking. So the best of luck to you.

I don't know. I had to get really sick before I quit. Honestly, if I hadn't gotten sick, I probably would still be smoking. People that don't smoke, or who never have, can't imagine how addictive they are. I enjoyed it, because it was relaxing. Like the lady on the commercial...even knowing that it's not good for you, you still have to have a smoke ! I was lucky. I'm o.k. But knowing how much I liked them, I'm afraid to ever do it again. You have to quit. Not "wean" yourself off. It's hard, but, the benefits are tremendous.

the nicotine in cigarettes (and in cigars) is what causes the addictiveness. nicotine is a chemical that acts on our brain as a stimulant (sort of like caffeine) which makes us feel good. this feeling of "goodness" is addictive cuz why wouldn't you always wanna feel good? so our body craves it and causes the addiction.

i don't really understand your second question though...you don't have to be mean to nice to stop smoking..
