I have 2 female and 2 male cats. The two females have matted fur, one of them very badly. They do not go outside, so they can't really get very dirty. They are all "fixed", but one of the males mounts the female cats. I know this is kind of gross...but if he is fixed can he ejaculate? and could that be what is causing their fur to get so matted? Thanks if you can help with this.

Cats can get matted whether they get dirty or not . I have been grooming dogs and cats for 27 yrs so I know. Once a cat gets very tight knots the only thing you can do is shave it and start over. The only way to keep them from getting matted again is to brush and comb them a lot with the right brush ( a slicker brush is the best ) and a good metal comb. While your male mounting the females may not be helping they would get matted anyway as there hair gets that way from a build up of under coat that needs to be brushed out.

I don't believe a fixed male cat can ejaculate, because the testicles are removed. Basically, when they're fixed, they're castrated. There is nothing in the cat's body that produces ejaculate.

What if you brushed your cats daily? Start by cutting out the mats and being diligent in combing from now on. Since you're not with your cats 24/7, you may not find out what's causing the matting. Ask a vet, just to be on the safe side, and comb the hair daily.

Grooming your cat regularly with a brush or comb will reduce the occurrence of mats in the fur. Unfortunately, many cats wind up with matted fur because they hate to be groomed. Here's how to deal with the problem, which occurs most often in longhairs.
Instructions
STEP 1: Attempt to remove the fur mat after the cat has eaten. Cats tend to be more relaxed after meals. STEP 2: Adopt a calm and soothing demeanor as you approach the cat. Have your manicure scissors hidden in your pocket as you pet the cat. STEP 3: Once the cat is relaxed, try to work out the fur mat with your fingers. Pull out the scissors if that doesn't work. STEP 4: Snip down the middle of the fur mat, far from the skin. It's quite easy to snip the skin accidentally on longhaired cats, so work carefully. STEP 5: Slowly work apart the fur mat with your fingers. Snip away a little more if necessary. Reassure the cat in a soothing voice as you snip. If she becomes upset, stop and come back to the task later. STEP 6: Once you've worked apart the fur mat and it's clearly away from the skin, cut it off. STEP 7: Reward the cat's cooperation with a kitty treat. STEP 8: If the cat has several fur mats, remove them at separate times. The cat will quickly lose her patience after you remove the first fur mat. Build trust with a gentle approach and kitty treats to make future encounters easier. STEP 9: Bring the cat to a professional groomer if the cat is unapproachable, if the fur mat is in a delicate area or if the mats are extremely tangled. STEP 10: Purchase a hair-ball treatment at a pet store to help your cat eliminate a troublesome hair ball. Or feed the cat butter or a can of oily sardines. Overall Tips & Warnings
If a cat is vomiting hair balls, it is a sign that he needs more grooming. Comb or brush Kitty at least once a week to remove excess fur, more in shedding season. Cats ingest their fur while they groom themselves.
If a cat is retching for days, stops eating or is constipated, bring him to a veterinarian. It could indicate that a major hair ball is blocking the digestive tract.
If a cat stops grooming, bring him to the veterinarian. This is a common sign of underlying illness.

If you cannot do this your self - PLEASE !! take these matted furred babies to a vet or a groomer. They will shave off the matted fur. DO NOT be alarmed this fur WILL grow back. But YOU as thier owner must take responsibitlity for thier everyday grooming. I have three cats they have never had mats. I sit on the floor and bang the brush and you will see the three running to be groomed. They love the attention. It is a learned thing, for cats. If they are left on thier own, neglected without attention, they will not take care of themselves. Think of children that need constant supervision, they will become lazy and bored if you do not interact with them, you need to keep them active, and interested. Talk to them, and praise them, pet, brush, them weekly, when they come to you for attention, get out a brush.
I hope this helps.

Try brushing with a Zoom Groom. It's a funny looking kind of rubber brush that works really great. Professional gromers use them. (I heard about them from a groomer.) They're very inexpensive, maybe five bucks, and you can find them at pet stores, brick & mortar or on-line. (Just Google for Zoom Groom.)

I don't think a neutered male can ejaculate. His interest in your girls just goes to show that sex is in the brain as well as in the gonads.

shave em, i have a cat like that and we shave him about twice a year. the only way it can get matted is when the cat grooms itself, the fur gets all tangled and it causes matts. oh, and your male cat cannot ejaculate if he has been fixed.

For heaven's sake don't consider putting Nair on your cats!!!!!!!!!!!

A groomer can remove the mats with clippers and vet techs at the vet's office do that all the time too. That's the safest way to go. Then you need to keep up with daily brushing and combing.
